Question:
How can I fit this into my job?
I will be having surgery in a few months, the date hasn't been set yet. I work in a hospital laboratory with bacteria, blood samples etc... No food or drink allowed in work areas because it could get contaminated. How do I do the bypass post op diet when I go back to work? I deal with patient specimens in critical capacity. I just can't go to the break room every fifteen minutes or so for a drink or small snack. Lunch is worked around my patient workload and my co-workers schedules so it is not at a fixed time. Anybody else work in a hospital who has had the surgery? — mommie-mouse (posted on June 20, 2009)

Wow, that sounds tough. I dont work in a hospital setting, but I do know
that when I went through it, my doctor was willing to write me out as long
as needed. She wrote me out the typical 6 weeks, then another week, but I
just decided I would go on back. My situation was great at the time because
however long she would write me out, I would get full pay for it. So if I
would have taken the full FMLA leave (I think 24 weeks?) I would have been
paid in full that whole time. But your circumstances may be different.
However, try getting written out longer so that your body can get all that
it needs during that early stage of post-living.

Depending on how long you are out for the surgery itself, most companies
will require you submit an ok from the doctor for returning to work, which
should note any limitations, such as lifting. I would think if he specified
that you must get a few minutes each hour to take in fluids, that would be
acceptable for your employer. Perhaps leaving a water bottle just outside
the door of your lab. I would think a hospital lab would be understanding
of doctor's orders. Good luck :o)

Yes, I work in Radiology. We too cannot have food in the work area, so I
had to learn to excuse myself as needed for a drink. Smoker's leave to
smoke......why can't I leave for a 30 second sip???? Anyway, you'll have to
re-learn how to get your H2O in, but I agree that you should talk to H.R.
about their FMLA (medical leave act) to take care of yourself a bit longer.
At least until you've had a month to heal and learn how to eat/drink the
new way. -Good luck!!!!
