I had the same problem with protien as well. I'm 35 and my hair was thick
before now it's sooo thin. I use Nioxon shampoo that seems to be working. I
also have been drinking the New liquid Whey in grape flavor with some Ocean
spray sugar free single servings of cran grape in my water. That is 42
grams in one Liquid whey so I try to do 1 1/2 of them to help get over 50
grams in for the day.

Kris, are you eligible for state funding health care? Regardless of the
answers on this forum you really must find a way to have some lab work done
and see a medical professional. Is there a clinic or something you may be
able to go to?
I never ate any protien bars or took any protien supplements. My procedure
was a little different. I had the MGB with Dr. Rutledge. By the time I
was two weeks post-op I was relying heaviily on refried beans and beef
jerky. I had some thinning at my temples but no significant hair loss.
Now, 9 years post-op I'm still HWP and my hair is thicker than it's ever
been.

Try Nurti-Ox real good for hair loss. Mine came back real thick takes about
a month before you see results but works wonderful and you should also try
the conditoner that goes along with it too. I found it at Sally's where
hairdresser's get their supplies both bottles cost around $10.00 with a
Sally's discount card. Cancer patients swear by this stuff because they
lose hair with chemo and doctor's recommend using this because it works so
well. Hope this helps.

I have been taking 5,000 mcg of Biotin a day,, plus Protein and
Multi-Vitamins, like Chewable Centrum for Adults. These are both available
at Wal-Mart or any Pharmacy. I think the Biotin helped my hair loss a lot

At 5 years post op, you should not still be losing hair. From RNY, this
normally occur in the 4-8 month time frame, with hair that does grow back.
Hair may be thinner in content, and have a different "feel", but
most of it should grow back. At 5 years most of your protein should be from
food. I'm 31 months out, and I still take one protein supplement every day
or two--just to make sure I get enough protein in my diet. You state you
can't afford labs, but the labs ARE IMPORTANT for long term health. I
suspect you may have a vitamin deficiency that has gone on for a length of
time that is causing your hair loss. If it is truly a vitamin shortage,
then you may be at risk for more serious health issues, some of which may
be irreversible. Get your labs done, please. DAVE

4-5 years post op is when most vitamin deficiencies begin to show up in
RNYers. You need labs and really do need to find a way to get them...Why
people think that protein is the only food we need after surgery for
survival and a hair loss cure- all is BEYOND me... You should also be
taking a multivitamin...but I agree with Dave...PLEASE go get labs...Don't
put a price on your quality of life...It could cost you so much more if you
ignore this...

I would suggest applying for the state programs or free clinics in your
area. Also maybe stop the iron for a week then start it again. And are
you also taking a vitamin & mineral supplement to insure that you are
getting all the over nutrients your body needs. If there is a nutritionist
at your county health department or county extension office; ask them for
foods rich in nitrogen; they promote healing and allow any trauma to the
body to heal. As for your hair, Pantene is another
product(shampoo/conditioner) that works well. It gives the hair the
specific vitamins it needs. And believe it or not, eating jello and doing
it every other day works wonders on hair and nails. Also yogurt. I have a
list of foods I use that work well if you are interested.
God Bless and Good Luck,

Check out a profile on YOUTUBE from Massagegoddess. She recently saw a derm
for her hair loss one year postop. She talks about her diagnosis and
treatment. Also no excuse on the labs, to me its part of the responsiblity
we takeon when we have the surgery. I'd suggest a free clinic in your area.

I completely get that times are hard, but, we all knew that we were in this
for life when we underwent WLS and all that comes with it. Part of that is
getting regular exams and lab work. Please, please find a way with family
help or whatever you have to do to see an MD and get some labs done.
Losing hair at 5 years post op is not normal. Please find a way to get the
problem diagnosed and fix it asap.
Best of luck,

Thank you all for your advice. Yes I have applied for state and city aid
and am about 50.00 monthly over the limit to qualify.
I do also take multy vit/calcum/iron/D/B12/folic/Fishoil/C and a multy for
stron hair &nails. As a single mother working 2 jobs I understand the
importance of Labs and poss other complications that may be occuring that I
am not even awear of....but in all honesty I find RENT-ELECTIC-HEAT AND
FOOD as my priority. I will try ur suggestions. It is unfortunate that
these hospitals dont provide life long follow up and the fin aide for
patiants in my situation. again TY

I AM LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, YOU NEED TO HAVE LABS DONE, TAKE YOUR VITAMINS,
AND I TAKE BIOTIN FRM WALMARTS, THEY ARE 1000 MCG, I TRY AND TAKE 3 A DAY,
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT SELLING THINGS ON EBAY, I GO TO GOODWILLS, YARD
SALES, ETC. HUNT THINGS SELL THEM ON EBAY, FOR XTRA MONEY!! YOU MAY CAN DO
THIS TO GET ENOUGH MONEY FOR ATLEAST GOOD VITAMINS, MAYBE EVEN LABS, OR
SELL THINGS YOU DON'T REALLY NEED LAYING AROUND YOUR HOUSE, I KNOW YOU
CAN'T RIGHT NOW, MAYBE YOU COULD EVEN HAVE A YARD SALE AS SOON AS SPRING
GETS HERE, TO GET ENOUGH MONEY FOR LABS, LOL. JUST THINK OF WAYS TO EARN
EXTRA MONEY!! LIKE THEY SAID IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING HAIR ISSUES, IT
PROBABLY IS A VITAMIN DEFICIENCY,AND YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE THIS DONE!!

Sounds to me like your hair loss might be stress-related. If you are in
this much stress, then you need to take a serious look at what is causing
it and try to learn to deal with it better than you have been doing. It is
true at 5 years out you really should be getting the vast majority of your
protien from real food. Did you know that oat bran has some protien? It
also has natural biotin that helps in hair growth. I have planned on
taking biotin if my hair loss gets extreme. But I have to tell you that
your hair loss is signaling a larger problem that you need to address. I
am sorry I don't have a simple answer for you. I am a single mom and I use
to work two jobs. It nearly ruined my health and I am concerned that you
are doing the same. If you gave up your second job, would you qualify for
state aid then? Just a thought.

When I started losing hair, my surgeon told me to take Biotin. It is
Vitamin B7 which is found in some foods like egg whites. I take a 1000mcg
daily and it has helped in addtion to proper protein and time. You can't
overdose and won't start to grow unwanted hair other places because it is
what they call "water soluble" which means we urinate out any
excess in our system. My Dermatologist told me it may take 4-5 months for
hair loss to slow and some re-growth to happen. Hang in there!
