Question:
Tryptophan Sensitivity?
I'm four years post op. My buddies tease me all the time, because after eating anything with turkey in it, I get sooooo sleepy. I know the myth about tryptophan, but is it possible that surgery heightened the reaction to it? It's completely 100% NOT in my head! Even if I don't realize I ate a turkey sandwich, my friends will! — ScottieB86 (posted on October 21, 2008)

i found out a very important thing about tryptophan and turkey and getting
sleepy. the only way tryptophan will make you sleepy is if you combine it
with starch or carbs (i forget which one) BUT POTATOES, BREAD mixed with
turkey is when you will get sleepy...not just turkey itself

Well goodness gracious! Today I had some stuffing and some roasted
potatoes with it (small amounts of each, but STILL! BOTH a carb and a
starch!).
No wonder I was sleepy enough to finally ask about it! HA!
Thanks!

It is not a myth about Tryptophan, it is real. You can get it in
supplement form if you have difficulty sleeping.
I don't know about the surgery heightening it though.
