Question:
How long does the gas and weird bowel movements last?
I am six weeks out and still passing tons of gas; is this normal? How long does it last? Just started being able to eat a little without it hurting my stomach. Up until yesterday even one bite seemed to hurt my stomach. Still having frequent very small bowel movements that are just little spatters. Is this normal? Sorry; I am overwhelmed. — nofrogs29 (posted on October 5, 2008)

I am six weeks out as well. My surgery was performed by Dr. Schweitzer,
Dr. Magnuson's colleague, at Hopkins Bayview. I still have tons of gas and
frequent small bowel movements. I'm not quite sure if this is normal or
not. I'm in the same boat......totally overwhelmed. Everyone says that it
gets better. I hope so!

Yep, it will last awhile. I suggest you purchase some Enzyme pills. The
people at the Vitamin Shoppe recommended Source Naturals Daily Essential
Enzymes and I love them. Take them either before or after you eat and it
cuts the gas down tremendously because it breaks your food up and helps the
digestive system digest the food. I've given them to my sister and
sister-in-law and they love them. I think anyone who have digestive
problems would be able to benefit from these. I already would get gas from
fruits prior to my surgery and now even more after. I told my surgeon and
he said it depends on what you're putting in your body; however, we all
know there are foods that gave us gas prior to surgery and it will be the
same after. Honey Bean-o and Enzyme pills are my best friends. I have a
bottle of each at work and I also pack them when I travel. I'm 18 months
out and for a while was having those little bowel movements, every time I
would urinate I'd have a bowel movement. Your body is still adjusting and
I know it's weird unfortunately they don't stress the amount of gas that
one will experience after the surgery. Are you taking pepcid before you
eat? That may help alleviate the stomach pain --try it and see -- couldn't
hurt.

I am just about 2 yrs out and still have gas. I think its forever.
However, I use to get severe stomach pains too. I take GAS X seem to help
when I have it. I haven't tried the preventative beano though. I found
that certain foods did give me the stomach pain. Again it all comes down
to moderation. Best of Luck

I had gas for a long time...The less carbs i eat the less gas I have...The
healthier my diet, the more normal my bowels and sounds and smells (I know
graphic...but sometimes we gotta talk about this stuff!) Probiotics help
tremendously! I take one r if I eat something that might give me gas...Or
if I don't "feel right"...You can get them EVERYWHERE! It seems
there are a gazillion companies making probiotics these days! I use one I
got at Costco...They are tablets but are very soft...You know, once I
dropped one in a stopped up toilet and it actually unstopped it! ( In about
an hour) No joke! It breaks down FAST and those billions of little
bateria go straight to work on all kinds of plumbing!
But as for gas...yeah, it's pretty much normal for a while...Sugar is the
worse smelling gas for me! Simple carbs too...The leaner and healthier I
eat the least amount of gas I get...Probiotics really help...and they are
good for your immune system since about 70% of your immune begins in the
intestines! Probiotics take about 2-3 weeks to kill off bad gas and odor
causing bad bacterias...So give it time to work, if you have severe gas and
bloating...Find a probiotic with 10 Billion units of Lactobactilus and
acidolphilus! 2 really good ones to look for! It helps me with milk and
cheese too! There are so many good reasons to take a probiotic...and no
reason reason not to! Ask your doc next visit!

A great help with "bowel movement" problems and
"regularity" is a good "liquid" vitamin / mineral
supplement like VEMMA. Go to www.TrySomeVemma.com

You might want to take a look at the ingredient lists of what you are
eating... sugar and especially sugar alcohols (found in many/most low carb
foods as a sugar substitute) can cause horrible gas/diarrhea.
Good luck.

I am 3 months out and have gas and weird bm still. I had horrible gas the
first week and now I get it after I eat. If you have a weird stomach don't
eat sugar alcohol like sf candy. You will learn what foods upsets your
stomach. Just get gas-x strips and carry them with you. Hope that helps.

I'm over 2-1/2 years out from RNY surgery. I'm sorry to tell you but the
large volume of gas and weird bowel movements will continue. It's a small
price to pay for the positive aspects of the surgery. I must say though
that, after 6 weeks, always having a hurting stomach after eating was NOT
my experience. I'd have the situation checked out by your medical team if I
were you. And DON'T GIVE UP until you get some straight answers and
something proactive done to abate the problems you are having.
