Question:
Can you give me advice on iron & Hemaglobin

Does anyone know is it possible to get my hemaglobin and iron up in 8 days? My iron is 23 and my hemaglobin is 9.8, my wls Dr's nurse called today said they are to low, he won't do surgery if they are that low! I am going to see my pcp in the morning. I am sure she will give me iron pills! I am going to the store tonight to get high iron foods! Spinach, rasins, nuts, green veggies? Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible to get it up FAST?? HELP? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!    — CYNDI B. (posted on April 30, 2003)

I had a lap R&Y performed with hemaglobin of about 6.7. The doctor informed me I may need a tranfusion during the surgery; however, this did not happen. Now, when I had a hysterectomy and tummy tuck performed last year, the plastic surgeon was a stickler, and he made me visit a hematologist. I had to get two iron transfusions before surgery. It took four hours to get, and the last one caused me to have a delayed reaction. Although, my hemaglobin and hematocrit went up to a satisfactory stage for surgery. Talk to your surgeon about these possible options. Good luck, sweetie.

Post and Pre method for increasing IRON is to take a supplement such as Ferrous Sulfate ground up...ie with pestle & morter or chewed (yuckie tasting but does the trick). Vitamin C is good to take at the same time to increase absorbtion. There are also some liquid Iron +Vita C products available at Health Food Stores.
