Question:
Has anyone had problems w/ swelling feet and ankles before surgery?

Suddenly, my feet and ankles are swelling all the time. I've been put in a diuretic that helps a little. My Doc. thought that it might be my kidneys, but so far all tests have come back fine. I was just worried that I might not be able to have WLS...    — pamela1 (posted on September 6, 2002)

I have had swollen lower legs and ankles since I was pregnant with my son 16 years ago. Two weeks before surgery my PCP told me to take my diuretics every day rather than every other day. It didn't help much. The morning of surgery I had 3+ pitting edema in my right leg and 4+ in my left leg. They did the surgery and almost immediately the swelling went away completely. I even had problems crossing my ankles in bed after surgrey because the bones clacked together. Unfortunately the swelling came back a few weeks later but not nearly as bad as it had been before surgery. Good Luck.

My feet and ankles swell by the end of the day. My PCP says this surgery will help this immensely. I hope so! Good luck!

My legs and ankles were full of edema before my surgery. After the surgery my husband told me my ankles were down right sexy. My legs are very slim and I have discontinued my lasix.

Oh my gosh - my left leg in particular was disgusting. Half the time I wore slippers at work (when I sat at the desk). IMMEDIATELY after surgery my legs, ankles were back to normal. I still get the biggest kick out of looking at them - ! Now, I have noticed they still swell to some degree if I sit for long periods of time and/or have salt. I try to get up and walk during the day and am definitely cutting back/eliminating sale. It's great to wear sandals again! Cande

I have swollen feet and ankles, but it's not water, it's blood - I have venous stasis disease. Blood pools in feeties, 'cuz it's too much work to get it back up to heart. Also because the little valves in veins that are supposed to prevent backflow are overloaded. Diuretics don't help me - exercise does, to some degree. Also helps to not constrict blood flow between heart and feet. In other words, lie flat. :o)

Mine were swollen 2 months prior to surgery. I didnt know if it was water, or the heat. But when I woke up from surgery, all the swelling was gone and haven't been swollen ever since.

It's a relief to me to hear that the swelling may go away after surgery. My left calf on down to my foot gets so swollen that I refuse to wear shorts, dresses, etc.Does anyone else have a problem with theirs not only swelling up,but turning bright red and hot to touch?? My doctor just says its from my weight and vericous veins so I take a prescription diuretic daily and it still is the same.My skin is also severely dry and itchy all the time in those areas,I get so frusterated,I hope this will all subside after surgery.Take care all......

by the time I was home from the hospital my feet had shriveled to a svelt size I hadn't seen in ages.. all my shoes were almost instantly a little big... my ankles and feet don't swell at all anymore... I do think a lot of it has to do with the quality of food I'm eating and less sitting all the time... it will go down.. I promise.. mine used to swell all the time!

My feet and ankles were swollen constantly before surgery. I would have to keep my tennis shoes on from the minute I woke up until I went to bed so that the pressure from tying them tight would keep the fluids moving (actually, now I realize it just made the swelling stop at my calves). I had surgery on June 20, 2002 and when I left the hospital 10 days later I was 23lbs lighter and I couldn't believe I actually had veins and bones in my feet! I've had problems with swelling during long car trips, but that's about it! Now I'm down 52lbs and swelling, chafing, and rubbing everywhere is lessened!
