Question:
Anyone With Less than 70 lbs to Lose Had Surgery
I am very short 4'8" with type 2 diabetes and have less than 70 lbs to lose; bmi is 38. My father recently died from complications from diabetes and I have been unsucessful in losing weight on my own. I qualify for the surgery and am in the process; tentative date of August 2008. I want to know if anyone else has had RNY surgery with less than 70 lbs to lose. How long did it take to lose the weight? How much did you lose a month? I am wondering if it will come off so fast that I will have issues or is the weight loss percentage wise? — magenta40 (posted on May 14, 2008)

The gastric bypass, you have to be at least 100 pounds overweight, or that
is most of the material says about it. I have a girl in my support group
that had only 70 pounds to lose and she had Lap Band. I had Lap Band
4-16-08 and I am down 25 pounds and I know you lose it slower but I didn't
put it on overnight and I will not be taking it off overnight.

I really only had 80 pounds to loose but with multi co-morp I qualified. I
had my RNY done March 2005 by the Tallgrass surgeon at St Francis in
Topeka. Yes, after 53 years of being FAT, I had lots of sagging skin. I
still don't have enough sagging to qualify for corective surgery but I
gladly put up with the sags, bags & "rocks in the socks"
boobs with the freedom loosing that weight gave me. I love my saggy new
body! Becca

thank you. My doctor says I qualify because of the co-morbidity diabetes.
He actually discouraged me from the lap band and suggested RNY because of
the diabetes. He felt I would have a much higher chance of reversing the
diabetes.

While the guideline is 100 Lbs, you might talk to a sergeon about RNY as it
would resolve the diabities. There is also now a proceedure where the
vaccum the fat away from the small intestine to rid you of diabities and
help start weight loss, but I know RNY will cure it if you only had Type II
for 15 years or less. It did it for me after having Typoe II for 25 years.

You might begin gathering info for your insurance and surgeon on how RNY
cures diabetes. Print out whatever you can find and make a case for
yourself. Start here with the transcripts from CBS News' 60 Minutes. (many
Links relating to diabetes on this page)

I was 5'8, 241 lbs, 37.5 BMI at time of my surgery. I had other
complications like diabetes, dish digenerative disease, and high blood
pressure. My doctor also suggested RNY, Its been 7 months now. Ive lost 75
lbs so far and I have set another goal but reached my initial goal- no
longer obese! At first it came off fast 20-30lb in the first month, them
gradually 15lbs a month noe about 10 a month. Im very happy with my
results. If you have any other question feel free to contact me. Have a
great weekend!!!

I have less than 100bls to lose, but it feels like 200 pounds. When you
are short, weight seems heavy on the body. I am having the RNY because of
diabetes, and other health related issues that I'm hoping to get rid of
after surgery. I have learned so much from this website, all of the people
sharing their experience has given me a balance of what to expect from this
surgery. Hope for the best.
