Question:
Has anyone heard of someone getting a brain tumor after WLS...
I have a dear friend who had Lap RNY 3 months ago. After extensive testing she was approved for the WLS. Last week she was diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumor that was wrapped around her caratoid artery...is there anything that could have caused this that was surgery related or just unfortunate coincidence? — sherry111963 (posted on August 27, 2007)

No it is not possible. Tell your friend to carry on with the WLS diet as
planned. I wish for your friend the very best. While it is unfortunate for
your friend she now has another obsticle to face, gettiing the tumor out.
Tell your friend not to give up hope!! Best wishes, Mickey

Seriously doubt it had anything to do with WLS. I have a realtive with one
of those tumors:( In excellent health, 35 years old, perfect physical
specimen except for the tumor. Most of those tumors are non cancerous
according to my wife a cancer RN. Being MO a lifetime leaves us at greater
risk of cancer and all sorts of other killer diseases. Hopefully your
friends tumor is benign and they do well.

I concur with previous posters. I don't think WLS would be the CAUSE of
the tumor. The tumor may have already been there and not see because the
concentration was on the weight.
We will definitely pray her healing.

I don't think WLS could have caused the tumor. On the other hand when I
first went to an endocrinologist they tested my pituitary gland to make
sure it was functioning because sometimes it can cause weight problems.
Maybe this tumor was the route of your friends weight issues to begin with
and no one ever thought to check it out?

Common sense says that the two are not related.
