Question:
How do you figure the 6 month supervised diet?
OK, I just saw on someones profile that they were denied by their insurance because of having the 6 month diet with the first visit in May and the last visit in Oct. Ok, that has me worried cause my first visit with diet dr was in June and last visit was in Nov. I had called the bariatric dr's office and asked them if I needed one more month (Dec.) and they said "no" that the diet sr has to have documented in medical record for 6 months. But if you think about it, it is only 5 months thinking June to July is one month,July to August being 2 months, Aug. to Sept 3 months, Sept to Oct. 4 months, THEN Oct. to Nov. 5 months.....nov. to Dec would be the 6th month ..am I right??? I am so scared I am going to be denied, someone please tell me something good..LOL — WannaBSlim (posted on January 29, 2006)

HI, I started in Aug 05 and my last dr visit was Jan 06. My doc had all
the paperwork ready so as soon as I left her office she faxed it to the
surgeon, they faxed it that afternoon and I got approval the next day. Good
luck!!

I started Weight Watchers July 28. 6 months would be Jan 28, but I am
going to go one more time in February before I turn my stuff in.

I went to my PCP's office with a written list of all the diets I had tried
and the approximate dates going back two years. I included things like
curves and e-diets which were not actually doctor supervised, but were some
of my attempts to lose weight. Weight was something we frequently
discussed because of some of the weight gaining medications I take.
Because of those discussions and documentation of my weight at each visit,
she's considering all my attempts in the past two years as counting and
will write her report to reflect that. Did you ever discuss weight related
issues with your PCP prior to seeing the diet doctor? Perhaps your PCP
could write a letter in support of that. Good luck.

I am no expert on this, but I think it really depends on what part of the
month at which the person started the diet.. Maybe she/he started at the
END of the month of May. That would account for her only having 5 months.
right?

If I were in doubt, I would go one more month, but I have to tell you,
everything must be documented, weight each time you went in, what behavior
things the dr told you to try, exercise attempts, everything. Plump it up
with all the extra things you can add. I can say, most insurances will not
accept weight watchers.

If you are worried, then just do the extra month. Have your surgery date
ready, so you can go as soon as you are approved - you can always cancel if
you don't get approved!
