Question:
IS IT SAFE TO HAVE A BABY AFTER HAVING THIS SURGERY?
I AM 35 YRS OLD AND HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED W/ PCOS AND TYPE II DIABETES...PCOS MAKES IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO LOSE WEIGHT AND HAVE A SUCESSFUL PREGNANCY (IT CAUSES INFERTILITY). I AM 120 LBS OVERWIGHT AND I TAKE 2000 MGS OF GLUCOHPAGE A DAY FOR MY DIABETES AND I AM ON MY 8 MONTH OF INFERTILITY PILLS. I NEED TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF IN ORDER TO GET PREGNANT AND NOT MISCARRY AGAIN...UNFORTUNATELY, THE PCOS CAUSES THE DIABETES AND WEIGHT GAIN AND I CAN'T GET RID OF THE PCOS UNTIL I LOSE WEIGHT. DO U SEE THE CATCH 22 THAT I AM IN? I AM JUST WORRIED THAT ONCE I HAVE THIS SURGERY I WON'T BE ABLE TO HAVE A CHILD...HAS ANYONE HAD A SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY? AND DO U KNOW OF ANY COMPLICATIONS? I AM REALLY AT A CROSSROAD HERE AND I DO NOT KNOW WHICH WAY TO TURN. — ABEL1029 (posted on January 11, 2005)

Yes, its possible to have a baby after the surgery -- there have been
several posts on the subject, try searching the database and it might
answer alot of your questions. I had the surgery but also wanted to make
sure i was still able to have a baby once i had it. My ob/gyn and family
dr both had previous patients with the surgery so that helped ease my mind
that they would know how to help me deliver a healthy baby. Good luck!!

First of all don't give up hope I was told at 29 my chances of having a
baby were less than 15% becasuse of PCOS and at 31 I gave birth to a 10lb
2oz healthy baby boy after a big weight loss from being taken off some
medication. That was 16 years ago and I had WLS surgery 11 months ago but
in my support group we have a woman that her GYN has recommended the
banding for her so that when the pregancy does happen they can adjust the
band so that she is sure to get all the nurtients she needs for a
successful pregnancy and she is the same age and medcial condition you are
also. I talked to her father in law and she has lost 65 lbs in the last 4
months I hope this helps you because I know this is the same issue she is
facing also...Nancy

Hi Kelly,
I'm 34 and had gastric bypass about 3.5 yrs ago. I have lost 130 lbs (I was
280 and am 5'2.5") and I am now currently 4 months pregnant and very
healthy. My weight gain has been modest since pregnancy but I did
expirience a 20 lb rebound weight about a yr ago and have maintained around
150 ever since. (I am now 153). My OB is very pleased with my health and
does not consider me a high risk pregnancy for any reason (not my age or
the fact I had gastric bypass). Best wishes on your WLS journey and your
pending motherhood!

i have PCOS and diabeties over 6 years. when we first started with
infertility teatments i had to stop the glucophage and start insulin. i had
to test my blood sugar at least 4-5 times a day and keep tight control.i
was a very high risk as i had hypertension as well. pulmonary edema and CHF
follwed my first delivery and i was interbated for my second. im five
months out from my lapband and down 68lbs and over 110 since delivering my
second girl. Im now on NO INSULIN...completly diet controlled diabetic.i
now realize hw much of a carboholic i was and not be able to tolerate
breads, rice, and pasta has allowed me off all diabetic meds.i never was an
atkins fan..but i see now that helped so much in my weight loss.email me
any time. All the best! Tracey

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago. Had RNY in 2002 (it was a
revision from an earlier VBG) and gave birth to my daughter May 2004. We
got pregnant about a month after we got the go ahead to start trying. No
complications and she was totally healthy, normal baby. I had a
complication afterward - had to go back into the hospital 3 weeks after her
birth due to a small bowel obstruction, but that is a risk anytime after
any type of abdominal surgery, so I really think it was going to happen at
that time regardless if I had the baby or not.

ABSOLUTELY!!! My Lilly is 8weeks old and I also had PCOS, etc!!! We are
both very healthy and I have lost all my "baby" weight and am
starting back on the 40 I had left before getting preggers at 18 months
postop. Best wishes on your decision...
