I am sure the process is different for different docs, but most schedule the date once the insurance aproval comes through.

Some surgeons require a weight loss beforehand (luckily mine didn't) but I would think they would tell you this at the consult.

Mayo Clinic required me to lose weight pre op. I did thank goodness because I heard this week they cancelled a lady who was to have her surgery in Jan. for gaining. Please try your best to lose before surgery. It makes it so much easier afterwards.good luck to you..

honestly I think that rule is cruel, even though it makes surgery a bit easier.I believe in shopping for a surgeon that fits what you want. Things like LAP, and pre op dieting. Of course to do this YOU must research whats available. So you know what you want, and which surgery will better fit your lifestyle. I meet too many posties who have NO IDEA what surgery they had:( Or a clear idea of post op requirements. Too often these people are unhappy for one reason or another. So sad there troubles are often preventable if they had just paid attention pre op. I had one notable individual say I have no idea what they did and dont want to know now, then go on to complain they dumped when eating sweets. Well they were certinally told about that BEFORE surgery!

I was told not to gain even 1 pound or surgery would be rescheduled makes sense to me if you can't show some kind of control now it, will you be able to after surgery. My sister-in-law had her surgery about 8 months went crazy and gained 20 pounds in the 2 weeks before surgery and after surgery was so sick and hungry all the time. The brain is a complex organ and if you overfeed it before surgery then cut the food supply it is going to tell you that you are hungry all the time until it adjust to your new life style so I have decided to start the training now no more sodas, only 3 meals a day no snacks no matter how hard and smaller portions and less carbs. After the surgery is only a tool to a whole new lifestyle.

I am 2 months RNY this weekend, and I did not HAVE to lose weight before my surgery however, I did have to sign a form stating that I would not gain any weight. They said they have had lots of people freak out and eat like crazy before surgery and gain lots of weight.

It's a good idea to loose as much weight as you can before surgery. It's not a question of keeping it off, because you will after surgery. For every pound that you loose your risks of complications on the table go down. It only makes sense.

I gained 15 lbs between my first consult and my surgery date. Last meal syndrom. Every surgeon is different and they all have different rules. Losing weight before surgery is a stupid one in my opinion. Why are you there to begin with?

Hi Deb...This question that you asked came up at the support group meeting that I attend in KS...here is what our surgeons had said...Not everyone is required to lose weight prior to surgery, but in some cases the patient is required to lose weight due to their health risks for surgery...They want the patient to be in the best possible risk/health as possible. Since we are not all alike in our heath issues, this could be something that you might want to ask your surgeon as to why you are required to lose some weight prior to surgery.

Hi Debra, My doctor told me to try not to gain more weight before the surgery and told me to go on the Atkin's Diet. Said loosing weight, even a few pounds the Atkin's way helps shrink the liver a little. The Liver is right next to the surgery area and there is less chance of "nicking' the liver if it has shrunk somewhat. Yes, after the surgery the liver will go back to normal size. But most doctors ask for a little weight loss as a precaution for your saftey. My surgery is scheduled for the 5th of February and I went for my final pre-op checkup Friday with my surgeon and he was pleased about the 2 pounds I have lost since the Consult. So don't painic, it is not that they are asking for the impossible from you. It is for your own protection.
