Question:
Why is my insurance looking at my BMI alone without looking at my comorbites?
I fluctuate beteen 35.1 to 37 which shows I'm severly obese. I have sleep apnea, hypertension, mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation along with other significant comorbites. Why are they giving me so much trouble? — CINDY D. (posted on May 12, 2003)

Maybe your surgeon (if he is the one that wrote the letter to the insurance
company) did not stress the co-morbidities enough...JR

It would depend on your insurance requirements. Do they require a BMI over
40 before they consider you a candidate for surgery? Some do. Others will
say EITHER a BMI over 40 OR a BMI over 35 with severe co-morbidities. I
would get your PCP and/or surgeon to write a letter describing your
co-morbidities. Any other documentation that you can get from a
cardiologist and/or sleep dr. would help also.
