Question:
Strong urine odor years after RNY

Serious Question! My urine has the most foul and pervasive odor!I am wondering if it is related to post-RNY and weight loss? Going to the dr. is $$$ and I don't know to go to general practitioner or back to bariatric surgeon. I know I need to drink more water. It is not UTI - no pain and not ammonia odor. It is embarrassing and I wonder who else can smell me! Using baby powder - helps for a few hours.    — gratitude (posted on May 24, 2011)

I would say your first line of defense is to drink more water and see if that changes anything.

Urine should be straw colored and virtually odorless. It's imperative to drink 64 oz. of water at the very least. The odor could indicate the urine is concentrated and you are in the beginning stages of dehydration. I would contact the surgeon's office. They may need to give you some fluids through IV to get you back on track. The one thing that made it possible for me to get all my water AND protein in was by making two of my daily shakes using water and Syntrax Nectar protein powder (in one of the fruit flavors). I use 20 oz. of water in a shaker bottle and 1 heaping scoop of powder is plenty flavorful. Good luck.

Ruthie is right on the money, you must drink at least 64oz of water a day. When I urinate, I can smell my vitamins, so it is a red light for me to drink more fluids. This surgery is is rough and all that comes with it, but my sister it is so worth it. As far as the smell, I will wash down south at least 2 times a day!

7 years out and having the same problem with strong odor. Not dehydrated or infections, or UTI. It is really bad after eating seafood or drinking just a sip or 2 of beer and eggs are the worst for me. I take a good bit of meds for my RA and other ailments and think that could be some of the problems. Especially after taking one of my meds for HBP recently put on. Consult your gyno or Pcp and make sure there is nothing else going on. I am never in remission with my RA and I get sick easily due to immune so weak, but getting to your PCP and finding out what truely is going on would be the best thing to do. Ms Pisces

There have been lots of great answers so far, but I'd like to point out that you can't expect your urine to be "straw-coloured" (in response to another posting); the B vitamins in your multivit and any B12 supplement will make your urine very dark yellow, almost orange, and may also add an odour.

I take B-12 regularly and my urine is straw-colored. I'm not taking a B complex yet, but if I was, I would expect my urine could be darker yellow. Main point is I hope the original poster has followed through with checking with her doctor and getting in more fluids.
