Question:
6 days post-op and having cramping after I drink anything.

It started yesterday when I was drinking a cup of ice water. At first I thought I was drinking to fast, but even after I slowed down it hurt. Then I thought it was too cold, but I'm still having the cramping drinking room tempature water. The cramping is not very severe, but enough to make me wonder. Anyone else had this problem and found out what it was?    — Amanda Kirby (posted on December 17, 2007)

I had my RNY WLS December 5th. Last Friday I got Dumping from taking pills with water. I think one pill stuck. following that I get cramping or the feeliong of something tight in my throat. I am now cutting pills in half to try and get them down. I also found that taking jello and slushing in my mouth allows me to get down some liquid during this period without more disconfort. Try the jello trick, because when you slush it between your teeth, it becomes body tempature before you let it go down gently.

I couldn't drink ice water for several months. I was able to drink room temperature water or warm water. Try warming it a little.

Some people have difficulty drinking water. Room temperature is better for most people, as opposed to drinking ice water. I've even heard people at support meetings, who have difficulty drinking water 2-3 years post surgery. These people have told me that they use Crystal Lite or tea liquids to make sure they get enough fluid intake.

Hi Amanda! I had lap RNY on 11/26 and so far have had that cramping sensation whenever I drink anything - my water, my protein drink. It is almost like I can just feel it going down my throat and into my stomach - I thought maybe my pouch just couldn't tolerate the coldness but I can't tolerate room temperature water. So since the cramping only lasts for about 20 - 30 seconds after the first few sips for me - and then goes away after that, and isn't a horrible pain, I deal with it. I have noticed the past few days that it is less though so I think it'll be getting better soon. So yes, it's normal. Welcome to the strange world of getting to know your pouch. Congratulations on your surgery!!!

I also had trouble getting water down and I mostly rely on Tea or crystal light. I had my surgery in July and still have some problems with water.
