Question:
I feel like I am eating too much
This morning, I ate 1 pkg of Quaker Weight Smart Oatmeal and 1 1/2 pieces of toast. Does this seem like alot to anyone else or am I just being paranoid? I am 1 year out and down 141 lb....I just have that incredible fear of gaining my weight back someday. Thanks for the help. (And don't laugh at me LOL) — TraciB06 (posted on August 14, 2006)

Oh Tracy, I don't think anyone will laugh at you! Some days I'm amazed at
how much I can eat ( I'm 15 month's out, & down 121#'s), but it is
still WAY less than pre-op. And then some days I'm amazed at how little it
takes me to fill up. Just be sure to get in all your water, and keep
exercising. Your body is an amazing machine if we would only let it work
like it's supposed to!
I would cut out the toast - too many carbs, and maybe sub some cottage
cheeseor yogurt with some diced fruit to up your protein intake. We must
remember to ALWAYS and forever eat "protein forward", and toast
is an American obsession!

not that i'm an expert by any means, but this entire meal was carbs and of
little nutritional value to you. I don't think it's the quantity that
bothers me as much as what you are choosing to eat. Carbs=increased
appetitie and increased insulin problems = weight gain. Protein will make
you fuller quicker and longer...consider your food choices.

Your breakfast WAS NOT all carbs if you used milk. Remember milk is one
gram of protein per ounce and that is a good thing. (especially skim)
You don't say what your lunch or dinner was, but I would cut out the
toast or limit it to 1/2 slice IF it is high fiber.
I would add a fat free sugar free yogurt for another source of
protein.......add some diced peaches for a bit of fruit, if desired.
Sounds like you are doing very well. Keep up the good work.

I think we all have this fear of regain. We have lost so much and its hard
to just think its gone forever when you are further out and realize you can
eat. You probably could eat so much because those foods are not so dense.
When the foods are dense like protein we stay full longer. If you are
exercising, getting the appropriate protein levels, and staying with in
your caloric intake then it does not matter how big the meal is.

Well, I'm here to defend you on your breakfast. Not that it's the best
choice eating carbs, but sometimes eating eggs gets old and sometimes you
just want something comforting. Yeah, protein is best...I will definitely
defend that. But the question wasn't "am I eating the right
foods." I think if it's your staple, maybe a change is good, but I
have my oatmeal days too. As for the amounts you are eating, I don't
think it's too much at a year out considering what it is. These carbs do
break down quickly, and oatmeal, although thicker than some things, will go
through quicker than eggs. The way I give myself a reality check on my
portion sizes is to look at "normal" people and their portion
sizes. If I feel like I'm eating more than them, then I need to watch it.
So far I've noticed that I rarely feel like I'm eating more than the
thinnest person in my company, so if I'm eating as they are, I shouldn't
gain weight. (Unless grazing is a factor.) So give yourself a break.
Yeah, I do think we can gain it easier than "normal" people, but
if you are checking yourself against them and keeping it within their scope
or just below, you should be fine. And when all else fails, count up your
calories on a day you feel you're eating too much and see where you are at
there. Good luck!

I personally see oatmeal as a healthy coice for breakfast. It had complex
carbs that we all need to be healthy and fiber to slow the absorption of
the carbs to keep our blood sugar at a stable level. If the toast was
whole wheat I see no problem there either, It is a mistake to lump all
carbs in the same category. A piece of 100% whole wheat toast is not equal
to a piece of wonderbread toast, and oatmeal is not equal to froot loops.
I put a bunch of nutritional info on my profiel. It is one of my life goals
to help others learn to eat for health and make good choices with heath in
mind, minimize fad diets based on nothing, and prevent eating disorders
based on faulty information.

Oatmeal is soft and more likely digest faster and easier than if you were
to eat a more dense type of food for breakfast. This is why it seems you
can eat "a lot". If you were to add meat or eggs or more high
protein items - it would take longer to digest and you would have the
sensation of feeling fuller faster and therefore eat less.
