Question:
My hair is soooooo OILY since surgery...........

Today makes one week post-op and my hair seems so oily. I have always had oily hair but this is ridiculous. If I take a shower at 8am, by 4pm my hair looks like I've washed it in crisco. I've never heard this question come up before, so if anyone has had any experience with this please let me know. Thank you so much.    — Susan M. (posted on October 17, 2003)

Opposite for me...I went from healthy to dry & brittle within a month. It's doing wonderfully now (granted, it's shorter & it's falling out much slower). I only wash my hair every 3rd day. Check with your local professional salon. They usually have some really great ideas/products to help with oily or dry hair. Good luck!

Have you tried Nizoral? It's a medicated RX shampoo...it really helped my husbands hair a lot... he had flakey hair, but the oily stuff too... and it got rid of the flakes and a lot of the oily problem... his forehead is quite oily still but his hair is a lot better... I used to pray he'd wear his hat in public...

I've had that too! My skin also. I've always been very dry but since my surgery I've been having bouts of oiliness! This may sound crazy and there's probably not an ounce of truth to it but my theory is that it's my fat eeking out! It seems to me that when I'm losing, I'm oily. When I'm slow, I'm normal. Very interesting!!!

I wish I still had hair! After the surgery I've lost a TON of hair. Had to shave my head because if it. Loading up on protein drinks now to try and restore it. Good luck to you!

Try rinsing some cheap, pee-colored beer through it. Also, try using a different conditioner. They make them for oily hair. You could also endure the horror of the oil for a few days and NOT wash the hair for like two days...that may help curb the oil. Also, don't touch your hair. Running your finger through it, especially if you wear hand lotion can really make it oily...even washing hands with something like DOVE can leave a residue on your hands that rubs off in your hair. There is a shampoo you can try called (This isn't spelled right) Neutrogous (yellow, smells like dirt, tiny little bottle, expensive) that helps with oily skin.

I had the exact same thing. I also had a face that looked like I had rubbed petroleum jelly all over it. My hair has always been oily, but this got really bad. But then after about 2 weeks my face returned to normal, and hair more normal. I still look oily at the end of the day. Nothing helped, dr had no clue. My only guess (NOT an educated guess), maybe this is one way some of us get rid of some of the excess fats in our bodies. I could be completely wrong, but it made me feel better thinking this way.

I had this too. I switched from a heavy conditioner, to a shampoo+conditioner combo. For my face, I use the Dove Pillows.. they have a side that scrubs and one that is soft, they clean incredibly well, and I follow up with Mary Kay acne treatment (costs about $7 for a tube that lasts forever)... My hair is under control, and for the first time in my life, I'm only getting zits when I have my period, so this seems to really help. One pointer, avoid hair care products with Panthenol as an ingredient. It makes skin more oily and prone to breakouts.

Hi Susan, I had the exact same problem. I started to use the shampoo & conditioner in one and it seemed to help alot just give it some more time. Good Luck.

Don't use conditioner, if possible, and change your pillowcase EVERY day. Rinsing you hair with vinegar will remove any residues and make it shine, shine, shine. (And, NO, your hair won't stink).

I have oily hair as well, what I do that really helps is using an alchol based gel in it, (I use L'oreal's Studio line mega gel) It dries my hair out to a more normal state and also helps it look thicker. -- most hairdressers will tell you to avoid alchol based gels as they dry out your hair, but for me, that is exactly what I want!
