Question:
What do I ask the surgeon at my last pre-op appt?

I am scheduled for surgery on Oct. 13th and my last pre-op appt is on Sept. 17th and this is pretty much my big day for any last questions I have for my surgeon. Has anyone regretted not asking certain questions? OR--Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me on what to ask him before surgery? Thanks.    — Susan M. (posted on September 11, 2003)

Check out this page, it might help you think of questions to ask your surgeon that you might not have thought of yourself. Good luck on your surgery! http://www.lvcm.com/njtomato/pre-op.htm

You might want to verify the problems that could go wrong once again. I had a very large number of complications after surgery and some of these complications had never been discussed with me. Such as, 6 weeks after the lap RNY, I had a blockage in my intestine from scar tissue and they had to go back in open to fix this problem. I had heard of a blocked stoma, but the blockage of intestine had never been discussed with me. I was shocked and terrified to find out that I had to have an open proceedure to fix this problem. It is good to know all of these complications befor you make your final decision. However, I would have gone through the surgery even if I knew this could happen, because the surgery has changed my life. Good luck at your last pre-op appointment.

My final question to my surgeon at the last preop visit was, "Is there any reason to think I may have a problem with this surgery?" At this point, I had already read and studied all the statistics and asked tons of questions about the procedure itself. He assured me that I was ready and there were no foreseen complications... I felt confident to move forward. Best of luck to you!

HI! That's a good question! My surgery is Wednesday (YIKES) and I just read last night someone else's profile saying that she's switching to the patch for birth control because the pill is no longer absorbed properly and won't protect against pregnancy effectively! All the sudden I am freaking out! My husband and I rely on OrthoTriCyclen along with condoms because we've been married almost a year and I am SO not ready to be a mom, also because I shouldn't get pregnant during this year of changes! So, if you're on the pill ask their advice, and let me know!! Anyone else had to face this?! Blessings! - Vanessa
