Question:
Almost 3 yrs. out and have began regaining some weight

In April I will be 3 yrs. out, I had a RNY and had lost 170 lbs. I have maintained the loss all this time, In December I started gaining, I have gained appr. l0 lbs. from my lowest. I exercise 4 to 5 times a week (walking on the treadmill) and watch what I eat. I eat 6 small meals per day and dring plenty of water. I do not eat 30 minutes before, after meals or during meals. I'm really scared that I will not be able to stop the weight gain and be back up to 351 lbs. Please help me and give me advice. I go to my surgeon in April, but I'd like to do somehthing about this now and not weight until April.    — GrammaAnn (posted on February 1, 2010)

I'm fairly new post-op so I can't give you any real advice, i'm sure others can. I have heard that a bounce back is expected at some point, as much as 10% and that is where you will level out. Of course, this isn't everyone, it's just an average thing I guess. Just keep doing what you are doing, watching what you are eating, and you will do just fine.

I am just over 4 years out from my surgery and have gained about 30lbs back. I'm very concerned also and am currently in search of a means to drop this weight again. I have had a number of other health issues and am sure this has contributed. I too have heard that it is typical to gain about 10% or so back before stabilizing but, like you, I am very scared.

It may be hormones?? Have you gone thru menopause? From what I have read the past few years a lot of people do gain a little when they go thru menopause. I know some people also gain back a few pounds and level off. I know my mother did. She had surgery 15 years ago and gained back about 20 LBS and stayed there for the next 12 years. She was prescribed a pain patch and has lost 40 pounds this past year. Wish I could get some of those!!!

I am 6 years out from RNY. I gained 10 lbs because I junked out on cookies and chocolate for a month. Just like PMS except it is menopause. I too freaked out but I quit eating the junk and went back to eating 6 small meals a day and I am losing the weight. I think the key is to watch what your eating and remember portion size. Something in your diet may need to be changed

All of the reasons for weight gain that have been mentioned are valid possibilities. Also, your pouch can stretch out over time allowing for more food. My biggest problem was getting careless about what I was eating. I think that happens after several years. The important thing is to bet the 10 off before it is more, and you can do that. Try writing down everything you eat for a week. Focus on protein first, it fills you up longer and limit or omit sweets and high fat foods for that time. Kick up the amount of time you spend on the treadmill. Your body gets used to the routine over time and needs more to continue to burn enough calories. I hope you have success doing this, and I think you will. God bless!
