Question:
How can I get some sleep?

Hi all, I'm now about 3.5 months out from my RNY and feeling GREAT... aside from sleepiness. Up to about a month ago I was sleeping through the night (not even waking up fully for bathroom breaks) for the first time in years and loving it. Now it's almost like my body thinks it can recharge in half the time, and I have too much energy to settle down for the whole night. It takes a while for me to get to sleep and I always wake up while it's still dark out and again at least an hour or two before my alarm goes off. More and more often it's taking longer for me to get back to sleep, or else I can't at all after the second time. I've tried working out longer, wearing myself out, no luck. My sister, who had her RNY two weeks after mine is also having trouble sleeping. Is this the norm? Can anyone recommended something to help with it? I have my (belated due to snow) 3-month check-up on Friday so will be talking to my surgeon then.    — snickersblk (posted on February 2, 2009)

I am having the same problem- I have way to much energy. I take Ambien. I am 11 months out. The problem there is if I don't take it - my mind just races and I can't sleep. If I don't get good sleep - I drag. Be interested to hear how others handle this.

I suffer from Fibro-myalgia and severe migraines. I have been suffering from a lack of sleep for quite some time due to these illnesses. My lovely wife, who is a nurse practitioner, has been studying these issues, and has discovered an herbal cocktail that seems to work for me. The primary ingredient that seems to help for the sleep depravation is Melatonin. I have been taking one 3 MG capsule of Melatonin a night. I have had the BEST night's sleep I have had in a LONG time, since I have been taking this NATURAL Herbal supplement. I have also been taking Co enzyme Q 10, or "CoQ10" as it is sometimes known as, Magnesium citrate, Malic Acid, and 5-HTP. These are all NATURAL remedies for my conditions, and seem to work WELL for what I have. I can't say that they work AS WELL as the prescription medications, because the PRESCRIPTION medication that I HAD been taking for the FIBRO-MYALGIA did SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the PAIN that my BODY felt, but unfortunately it seemed to CAUSE more pain with my MIGRAINES! This caused me to take more MIGRAINE medication, which made THAT less effective, and caused REBOUND headaches! DROPPING the PRESCRIPTION medication for the FIBRO-MYALGIA, and going with the HERBAL medications was less EFFECTIVE for the BODY pain, but MORE effective for the MIGRAINE pain overall! It was a trade off that I was willing to LIVE with! In ANY case, the HERBAL cocktail seems to HELP me get a better quality sleep! I THINK it is the Melatonin that is the supplement that is primarily responsible for that, but I gave the REST of the mix just in case anyone wanted to know. I hope that this helps. Hugh

I saw my PCP today and she says that I am not getting in enought calories that I should get in at least 1200 a day. which could explain my weight stall. I dont rally know, but i went in to see her for being sleep deprived. she gave me a script for ambiem to herl me sleep. I also told her about antiexty as well and she up my dose of zolft to 150. it is hard to fuction at work with no sleep. my heart is constantly racing. i ahve tried work out even harder but that did not help either, what could that be and is it surgery related.Thank you for listening Jennie

I am going to sound like a magnesium nut/addict, but magnesium citrate has calming effects and aids in my restless legs at night, has been prescribed for pain such as fibromyalgia and muscle pains...and for sleep as well! I am always low on magnesium in my labs and so I have to take it, but since learning some other uses for magnesium, I have been amazed at all it aids in! Sleep is one of those things! I got a magnesium tea at the Vitamin Shoppe for it's calming effects at night! It's really weird...you put a tbsp in hot water and it fizzles like some kind of science project! LOL It's really tart like lemons and needs a little sweetener...They have a cherry flavored one, but I didn't notice I picked up the regular flavor...It's nice though...! I like it and I do sleep more soundly at night as well as not having leg cramps or headaches too!

Have any of you including other posters thought you might have something on your mind or perhaps insomnia. Losing a large amount of weight quickly is a trauma to the human body. It may just simply be your metabolisms readjusting. Check with your docs and have some blood labs drawn to make sure there are no real problems. vinnigirl, retired RN

I'm having the same problem!!!!!!!!! I never thought it had anything to do woth the surgery though. My doctor gave me some "sleeping pills" which made me a zombie the next day... so I stopped taking them (with his permission, of course). So, I just take advantage of all of the extra waking hours and do my best. do end up taking a nap, sometimes, during the middle of th day, which I never did before. But it gets me through. I hope you can find the solution and let all of us know! Good Luck!

I too sleep differently. I get sleepy early and stay awake..duh...then go to bed and don't want to get up the next day and drag all day. I don't take anything, but would like to hear more about herbal remedies or teas.. I do work out 4 times a week and it doesn't seem to help with being tired during the day. If I go to bed when i feel tired initially at night, I wake up a million times during the night and stay awake for like an hour before falling back to sleep. I hate being tired, and I know my blood stats are good...thanks for all who wrote in with your remedies. great day all! hugs, kim

LOl. I dont sleep either. Like another poster said it may be the exercising or the energy being gained by losing so much weight so fast. I can sleep maybe three/ four hours at a time then it is over. So I just get up at that point and exercise. Any ideas on how to get back to a more consistent sleep pattern would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting this question, I am having sleep problems too.I will be interested to hear how you get on at your appointment tomorrow. The magnesium sounds an interesting thought and makes sence.

I am glad someone asked this question because since my surgery 6/08 I only sleep around 3-5 hours a night and my doctor gave me some sleeping medication and I can tell a little difference but not much - I am only getting one more hour of sleep and it still causes headaches due to lack of sleep.

I take Melitonin. This helps me get sleepy at the right time. Make sure you are not taking in any caffiene or refined carbs/sugars. I was bitten by a spider almost two weeks ago, and have been put on Tetracycline for it. That has caused an interruption in my sleep pattern. So double check any medicines and supplements you usually take with your doctor to be sure they are not causing the sleeplessness. Good Luck!
