Question:
I had rny 5 days ago & now there is blood in my urine. Is this normal?
Could this be a result of having had a catheter for a couple of days while in the hospital? My urine looks yellow, but when I wipe there's lots of blood on the tissue (and it's not menstrual blood). Also, I do not have any pain when I go to the restroom so I don't think that it is a bladder and/or kidney infection. — QwnBee2007 (posted on December 2, 2007)

I would strongly suggest you make an appt with your dr. You may have a
bacterial infection in your urinary tract or your bladder. This could
become serious. Do you have a fever? Are you sweaty? Is your skin
yellowish? My DH just had an operation, had a catheter and developed
bloody urine. He had scepticemia and is now on a 6 week course of strong
anti biotics. He was very, very ill. Take care of yourself. Don't let
this progress. Congrats on having your RNY, by the way! You won't regret
it!

AMOS MOD NOTE: Might be from the catheter but . CALL YOUR SURGEON RIGHT
NOW! It might be serious and no one here can diagnose you. Safety comes
first. please let us know what happens.

Congratulations on your RNY! I agree with Alison & Bob - this is better
not left to 2nd-guessing, and it's better to see your doctor and find it's
nothing than to let a potential problem become much worse. Please call your
doctor TODAY! And - as Bob said - please let us know what happens!

Hi Qwn, thanks for writing, but next time don't write here, call your
surgeon right away. It is not normal, although I don't know what would
cause it, it is not normal. My surgeon told me that if I was not getting
better every day that she needed to know. In a case like this you waste
precious time and possibly your health in asking questions here. If you
see blood, see your surgeon right away. Thanks. Patricia P.

Okay Okay I'm back with some new info. I ended up speaking with the surgeon
who basically told me to wait it out since I did not not have a fever or
pain. He said it could have been some residual bleeding since my catheter
had to be reinserted while I was still in the hospital because I still had
not urinated at 6 hours after having the 1st one removed. So, if it lasts
past today, to go in to my PCP and have a urnine test to test for infection
(which would then need to be treated with antibiotics) BUUUUTTTT... Here
comes the kicker! .....
So, I got to the bathroom and there is all this blood AGAIN, so I do
further investigating and I hold some tissue down there and force myself to
cough, however, I didn't feel any urine come out but there is still lots of
blood. Long story short it IS my period! I feel like an idiot! Sorry you
guys!

I agree that you need to get in touch with your doctor. I had the same
thing happen to me, there was no pain or anything and it was a very severe
UTI. The reason for not having any pain was because of the pain meds that I
had been on. So please all it takes (if this is what it it) is a few
minutes taking a pee at the drs office. But the doctors are the only ones
who can tell you exactly whats up.
Congrats on your surgery.
God bless you

this is not normal. i have had 75 operations with numerous catheters and
have never had more than a drop or two of blood the first time urinating
after catheter is removed.
