Question:
How Many Calories A Day Do Post Ops Consume?

How many calories do you eat a day? I got a note from a pre-op stating that she was told we could eat only 200 calories a day. WOW!!!!!!!!!! If I did that little I would keel over from starvation!!! I eat about 1000 to 1500 a day myself, but I am a big man. My wife tries to stay under 1000 because she is still trying to lose weight. I would love to hear all of your stories about this subject. It depends on how far out you are post-op and what amount of calories you need to sustain your final weight. For women, its usually around 1200-1500 after a year post-op, more for men or for tall women with higher weights to sustain and I would suppose a lesser amount for tinier women. I've heard that when you get to goal, measure what you are eating which is keeping you at your goal weight, and adjust up if you are still losing or adjust down if gaining.

I'm at goal and trying to maintain now -- I eat about 1600 calories a day on average (sometimes 1700). Still losing a little bit, so I'm not sure if it should be more or not.

At 10 weeks post-op, my surgeon told me I HAD to get at least 1000 calories a day and no more than 1400. I was getting about 500 and he was very upset. I am now almost 1 months post-op, at goal (his anyway), and he wants me to get between 1200 and 1600 a day. The 200 is pure fallacy - the body would go into starvation mode and not lose.

I track my menus on fitday.com and I seem to get between 600 and 800 every day no matter what I eat.

I am 3 months post op and I eat 600-800 calories per day. My goal is 60-80 grams of protein and I average 75. I stay under 35 carbs a day and don't really worry about the fat. I lose 3.5 pounds per week pretty religiously. I also walk four times a week minimum for an hour, but that is just to get away from my kids (just kidding) it is to get away from my husband (hee hee just kidding) but it is nice to have some alone time! 200 calories a day seems impossible and unhealthy.

How far post are you? I'm 22 months post and hit about 2000 calories a day...sometimes as much as 2500, but my weekly average is right around 2000 per day. I do take a two mile brisk walk 5 days a week and am MUCH more active in general than I've ever been. Hope this is helpful. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/129/125

I am just shy of the ten month mark, and I get in roughly 1200 calories per day. Sometimes I will get as high as 1800 or as low as 900, but I keep a record of my weekly average and it is always between 1100 and 1200 calories per day. When I first started tracking calories I was trying to stay under 1000 calories every day, but I learned by trial and error that if I vary my intake from day to day and try to make it average out to 1200, I lose more weight. I started at 388lbs and at almost 10 months out I have lost over 150lbs. I think I am on the right track. :)

when my calories drop below 1200 a day my body stops letting go of the weight.
