Question:
Did everyone who had RNY have to do a prep like for you do for colonoscopy?
I am scheduled for RNY sugery on 2/19... a friend of mine just mentioned that she had to do a prep the night before like you would for a colonoscopy... so far I have not heard this from anyone else. Who has had to do this? — Kathleen O. (posted on February 7, 2010)

Absolutely. They need room for one; if there's any perforation, there's
less bacteria to cause infection, and HEY, you weigh in lighter! Good
luck,

I just had my surgery on Wednesday and yes I had to do it. It was the
worst part of everything, but everyone reacts differently. I went into
shock from it and was sitting on the toilet all but passed out. Thank
goodness I had a roommate. she noticed I was in there for a long time and
called the nurse. It was an easy fix with an IV infusion and doesn't
happen to everyone. My dad is an Endoscopy nurse and he said this happens
because of electrolyte imbalances. If you are worried discuss it with the
doctor or nurse.

I had my laprascopic RNY surgery last October and DID NOT have to do a
bowel prep.
I was Nil By Mouth from midnight the night before and had my surgery in
the morning...that's all. I would check with your surgeons nurse. It might
depend if you are having an open or laproscopic operation.

Im having surgery on Wed 2/10/10 and am currently on pre-op liquid diet and
was told to drink 10oz bottle magnesium citrate night b4 at around 9pm,
geeze I hope im on the right track here, I also had a colonoscopy and I had
to drink a gallon of this stuff call go-lyte , with lime flavor, really
wasnt to much fun at all, I think your best bet here is to call your Dr,
DON'T go by what others tell you here . I only tell you this because every
bariatric center is different and Dr's as well. So you should do what your
Dr advise you. Im not by any means discrediting what info you may receive
here because I my self have asked several questions and got some great
advice , but on somethhing like this just do what your Dr tells you, best
of luck...

I was on a liquid diet for two weeks before surgery, and was not allowed to
take any pain killer 7 days before surgery. My innards were pretty much
cleaned out by my surgical date.

Yep, I had to take Dulcolax tablets the night before & a mag citrate
cocktail the morning of surgery. This was in addition to a 2-week pre op
liquid only diet. My doc wanted to make sure we were thoroughly cleaned
out for surgery. It is to reduce the chance of infection. They are after
all cutting and re-attaching your intestines. What do you think is in
there? This will possibly be the first of many "doctor's orders".
Comply. It isn't bad especially when you haven't had anything solid to eat
for 2 wks. Nothing in, nothing out basically.

I didn't have to do a colonscopy type prep, but I had to be on a liquid
diet regime and the day prior to the surgery, only clear liquids.
Good luck to you, it is a life changing experience!!!
