Question:
I am dehydrated and low iron anyone else having this problem?
I had bypass done on July 26, 2010. I can't eat or drink anything without getting that sick feeling. The smell of food makes me sick. Had my blood drawn a week ago Friday. My blooded show that I was dehydrated and was low on iron. Anyone else had this problem and what have you done? — wanda3055 (posted on August 29, 2010)

Hi,
I am 8 months out and have never had any iron issues, I set my alarn on my
cell phone and take flinstones complete chewable vitamins twice a day. I
also take calcium citrate chewable 3 times a day. I did become slightly
dehydrated, enough so they couldn't get any blood, durning my son's wedding
weekend. I took up eating sugar free popcycles and drinking water
constantly for a day and was fine the next day. You are still early out
anything you eat make sure is in tiny pieces and chewed until apple sauce
consistancy... also eat very slow! It's all different than what you use to
do... also always eat your protein first, veggies second and anything else
last... you won't have room for much! Good Luck!

I REALLY don't like water, so I make sure that I have a constant supply of
Crystal Light in my favorite flavors, but including the new Crystal Light
with Fiber. I use one of those 23.7 fluid ounce Glaceau SmartWater bottles
from the store (the ones with the sport top), and I keep it filled, and
even take it to bed with me. Everytime I wake up to roll over, or
reposition, I take a big swig of my flavored water. I keep boxes of
Crystal Light at work, and multiple boxes at home (I buy them on sale, and
they're always a great price at WalMart). Three of those per day gets me
in my 64 ounces, easily.... and I drink most of one of them during the
night! And although I am past menopause, so my surgeon didn't order me any
iron supplements, I had a visit to the emergency room and was hospitalized
a couple of weeks ago (for a cat bite), and the bloodwork they drew daily
showed that I was SLIGHTLY anemic. So, now they have me taking an iron
supplement, but I'm really not sure how necessary it is...thinking if I
would just be a little more vigiliant about the iron content of the foods
I'm eating, I could probably get away without taking it....but until I have
my 18 month appointment in September, and have new labs drawn, I'll be a
good girl and take the iron. It's just ferrous sulfate (over the counter),
one pill twice a day. You must have to be careful not to take it with your
calcium, or it will bind to that and not be absorbed. I heard that you
should take your vitamin C and your iron at the same time, to enhance
absorption. You might check it out.
