Question:
Nausea & dry heaving
My surgery was 2/2/09, I have been sick ever since. The were giving me zolfram in the hospital & not helping at all. They gave me phenergen at 11 pm and then sent me home. That was the best I had felt all day. When I got up the next morning and since then I have been sick. I have called my drs. office 2 or 3 times and I am getting no response. Ended up in the er last night for over 3 hours. the dr there did blood work, ct scan, and then gave me an iv with fluids along with phenergan for about an hour. Felt better than I have all week. Why does my dr. not want me to have the better of the meds & have i made the biggest mistake of my life? I want a healthier life but at what expense? — donnapusser (posted on February 5, 2009)

Hey there. It sounds like you are having a really tough time. Phenergran is
an awesome anti-nausea medication and works very well. I used it when I had
a failing gallbladder and it was my only life saver. If you are having
severe bouts of nausea the doctor really needs to find out what's causing
it. Did you have the Lapband? Maybe you have too much fluid in it. I would
recommend that you call your doctors office, tell them that you are very
ill all the time, that you have had to go to the E.R, that the only thing
that has made you feel better is Phenergan and ask him or her for a
prescription for it until it's figured out what is wrong with you. The
worst your doctor will tell you is "no". But honestly, why would
he?

There seems to be a growing number of surgeons that react like this...(not
at all and no bedside manners at all!)...Why? Who knows? DEMAND your
surgeon get you help...Do not allow yourself to be so sick because your
surgeon is being irresponsible to you as his patient...BUT... A lot of
people vomit after anesthesia/surgery and that might be all he is
thinking...and that in a while it will go away....But if it doesn't, demand
an emergency visit with your surgeon and NOT risk your health. It does get
better though...I don't know what surgery you had, but with all of them, we
adjust and grow stronger and healthier as we heal and shrink . I hope you
feel better as you soon...You still have a while to heal! Go slow and easy
with your diet...

Donna,
I'm with Anita on this one. Don't let the doctor dismiss you if you are
really sick. Believe me, some of them just think they can do whatever they
want and not worry about consequences. Its time they started becoming
accountable to their patients. Its your life; live it the best you can.
Good Luck and God Bless, I will pray for you,

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about what's going on. I understand how your
feeling about is this the biggest mistake of my life but this nausea will
end. You will start to feel better. In the mean time, you need to call
your surgeon all the time till you get a script for the anti-nausea
medication that worked best for you. I would suggest asking for a
suppository. I had the phenergen in liquid form and it made me more
nauseated. Also be sure you are taking gas-x strips. I take two at a time
because that is what they were doing with me at the hospital. I was told
that alot of the gas pain causes nausea so definitely try that. keep us
informed. you are not alone in how you feel. I'm 3 months out for my
surgery, I'm starting to slowly understand that it gets better. But stay
on your surgeon or go sit in his office till you get a script. I did that
for another problem I had. It took all day but I paid enough money for the
surgery. I'm entitled to follow up care. You are just out of surgery.
Praying for you. Hugs, Corina

Nausea after surgery can be a product of the general anesthesia. Phenergan
is an anthihystamine also used to treat nausea. Call your doctor's office
as many times as you need untill you get a response. It is his duty to give
you the best care possible. If you don't get a quick response, by all
means, feel free to report him to the proper authorities. Good luck.

Someone has got to be on call 24/7 so call every 15 minutes until you get a
response back. As a nurse, I have done this for professional and personal
reasons if I had trouble getting in touch with a particular doctor. I
would certainly raise holy &*%$ when you go to the office on your first
check up- be very sure to let them know how sick you have been, have had no
help and how maltreated you have felt. Speak to the office manager as well
as the surgeon and anyone else who will listen. Frankly, you shouldn't
have been discharged from the hospital so sick. You pay their salary- they
work for you. Please call now- the on call doc should be able to call
something in for you now. If you can't take anything by mouth- perhaps
some phenergan suppositories- I know it doesn't sound like fun but trust
me- you'll feel much better. You need to be concerned about dehydration as
well.
Best of luck,

After my surgery I experienced the same thing. My Dr. has been on top of
it but it has not made it easier. After many complaints they finally
started looking for the cause. They found out that the stricture to my
stomach had closed. Had 6 dialation and found two ulcers. Finally had
surgery to remove the ulcers. It has been four months since my surgery and
I can finally eat. Keep after them to find out the reason. If they don't
respond go to a different Dr. or emergency room and tell them something is
wrong until they investigate further your life depends on it.
