Question:
Biotin and Multi-Vitamins
I'm sure this question has been asked many times, but I can't seem to figure out how to search for previous topics and questions asked (I'll accept any guidance on that too!!). I have two questions: 1. How much Biotin do you take? 2. I bought my first non-chewable multi-vitamins yesterday and they look HUGE!! (One-a-Day for Women) I would think they'd get stuck! Has anybody had trouble with these at four months out? I appreciate any and all feedback...you guys are the best!! — Deni (posted on January 29, 2008)

Many vitmamins and calcium supplements come in large pills. I elected to
take a different route. I use a liquid vitamin (web page listed on my OH
page) and a powdered form of calcium citrate. The liquid vitamins go down
easily, instead of large pills. I mix the calcium citrate poweder with
morning oatmeal or with a shake in the afternoon. There are also liquid
forms of calcium, but they tend to be somewhat pricey.

Hi I am 2 1/2 years post op and I was told by my nutritionist that
chewables or liquid vitamins are the best for Gastric bypass patients.
They are absorbed better. I use tropical oasis liquid calcium citrate and
a chewable prenatel multi vitamin because I am breast feeding my six month
old baby. I do think at four months post op you should still be taking a
chewable. I just started taking the hair, skin and nails vitamin which
has biotin in it.

I was told that after RNY surgery that we do not have the stomach acid to
break down the pill form vitamins and calcium. My surgeon recommeds
chewables. Good luck

Use a pill splitter to cut the vitamins in half, that's what I did! But I
also have now switched to a multi-vitamin for bariatric people because of
the absorption factor. The answer on the biotin, I'm not sure of.....but I
am taking 5mg daily. I also am buying my vitamins through Bariatric
Advantage.

my doctor never told me to take the chewables so i have been on the regular
once since surgery and have done fine. the calcium was tricky at times, but
if you take it with sugar-free pudding or yogurt to help it slide down it's
much easier. i started the biotin before surgery and still take it now. i
take a 5000mcg capsule once a day. good luck and i hope this helps...Holly

I have taken 1 centrum vitamin each day with no problems and I assure you
they are just as big as the One-a-day's! I take 2 Biotin pills in the
a.m., and 2 in the pm. I am 10 months out and have been taking them since
about 4 months out wtih no problems. So each day I take 20 mg per day.
God bless and good luck!

I just bought some vitamins at Trader Joe's. They are chewable, have Biotin
, taste great and are only about $5 for 90.

Don't have an answer for your Biotin question--I can only take that for a
little bit before it starts making my skin crazy. The womens vitamins ARE
huge!! I am almost 2 1/2 years out and I still can't take them. When I
bought those I used to always have to cut them--which is nasty because then
you can actually taste the inside of the vitamin. They do have some
smaller ones--but they are hard to find.
