Question:
Will I ever lose again?
I had my Lap RNY on 1/31 and am about 21 lbs from goal. The problem is that I"ve been at a plateau for a year just about. Someone in my support told me my body may be in starvation mode and to up the calories because I"m still not able to each much at once, so I"ve been pushing for about 1,000-1,100 calories a day. I've been averaging about 60-80g protein in this daily caloric in take. My question is "when will I see if increasing the calories is working"? days, weeks months, ??? I feel heavier and I'm so scared I"m gonna gain weight as opposed to the opposite....HELLLPPPPP! Am I doing the right thing? — hatda (posted on August 28, 2009)

I'm afraid I can't help you, as I am in the same position. I had surgery 9
months ago and haven't lost any weight for the last 4 months. I too have 21
pounds left to lose.My Doctor said to watch the food choices I'm making and
up the excercise. It's hard isn't it!!!!
Good Luck

Congradulations on being 21 lbs from goal.May I make a couple of
suggestions? 1)Do a food journal for a few days and 2) take the journal to
your nutritionist so she/he could check it out. The only reason that I'm
suggesting that is sometimes somebody can see a potential probems that we
can miss. They can also make suggestions on how to fine tweak what you are
eating to help you start losing again.

Congratulations on your weight loss! It could be that your problem is the
simple fact you are not getting enough protein. If you will go to my OH
website www.obesityhelp.com/group/BellevueWA and check the extensive
information I have listed as a Support Group Leader for folks who are
members of my group, you will find information which should prove helpful
to you. The only folks who should have only 60-80 grams of pure protein
(not food protein because of the bioavailability factor issue) are those
who have had lap band surgery. The rest of us, including me, who have had
RNY, need a minimum of 100 grams of whey protein (meaning LIQUID PROTEIN
POWDER)to sustain us daily. If you are still wanting to lose, then, you
must significantly increase the amount of protein you consume daily far and
above 100 grams of protein daily. Mathematically, for me, this means 132
grams daily, and this is surely hard to do; but, I work at it with many
mini-meals. As one of the other posters recommended, you need to keep a
daily journal of your consumption, what you are eating, how often, variety,
nutritional content, etc. Last, being scared does not help you. It causes
your body, mind, and spirit to tighten up and hold onto what you eat with
dear life. You need to be at peace within yourself. You have an
excellent, excellent tool at your disposal. And, in your protein increase,
you need to ensure nutrition first. Checking with your nutritionist will
help you as well. What about your exercise, weight training, etc.? Is it
minimalistic, non-existent, or dynamic and different all the time causing
your body to simply give up and let you slim down the 21 lbs you want off
your body? Also, have you considered positive affirmations? They are so
cool and so helpful at getting you to have peace, true peace within
yourself and a vibrant well-being you can't get any other way. If you will
go to my personal website www.ObesityHelp.com/member/CHRISTINEGIBSON you
will find my own positive affirmations which I say daily. You are welcome
to copy what you will of these extensive positive affirmations. You are
also welcome to contact me directly if you feel I can further help you. My
e-mail is [email protected]. My phone is 425-885-2634. My prayers are
with you. Blessings, Christine Gibson, MS, MA, Bariatric University
