Question:
How can I afford the surgery?
I am a 22 year old college student, my parents have no money to help, nor is their insurance which is through their jobs going to help with the procedure. Should I just get my own insurance? Are there discounts for students? And what other suggestions could you give me. I am 320 pounds and this is runing my life! — JadedJassy (posted on December 24, 2008)

Hi
Getting your own insurance is an option, just make sure the policy covers
the surgery before you sign up. You can look into state benifets. Lastly
but not recomended is surgey in Mexico. You can always wait till you
graduate and start working to have the surgery.
Good luck

If you are a full time college student, you should be able to have medical
insurance through your parents' insurance. Look into that thoroughly. It
might be an option. In the mean time, see your doctor. Many insurance
companies require lots of documentation of your weight and weight loss
attempts before they will approve you for weight loss surgery.
Good luck to you.

Also check with your school to see if they offer any health insurance
programs for students. There's been a company advertising individual
insurance and they have a college student site -- here is the link --
http://www.assuranthealth.com/corp/ah/HealthPlans/student-health-insurance.htm
-- see what they have to offer you.

Your best bet is to work hard in school, graduate, and find a great job
with insurance. Many colleges offer insurance for part- and full-time
students but these policies are usually pretty basic... office visits and
if you're lucky, some basic prescription coverage. If you do decide to
purchase coverage, make sure you do your research first. Another thing you
might want to look into is Medicaid. Good luck to you!
