Remember that every person is different. Also, you can try all different
kinds of protein drinks. The bullet will get you the protein you need in
only 3 oz. I am not always full after I finish eating, but I measure out
my food before I eat it and don't eat more. If I still if I feel
"Hungry" I just drink some protein.....

The first couple of months can be rough on some patients. Try different
protieins (in samples) to find one you can tolerated. Mayby your normal doc
can help with the cold. 5 weeks is
a long time for a cold or the flu.
My surgeon did not allow beef until 6 months. By ground meat I assume you
may mean turkey or chicken? Not everyone dumps, and I know I don't. This
just means you have to make wiser decisions on your eating habits and foods
chosen. I'd highly recommend support groups for help through this difficult
time. I lost 100 pounds in 7 months, and my total wt loss of 150+ pounds
only happened when I was 24 months past surgery. Be patient, things will
happen in time. If you really think there is something wrong, consult your
surgeon. Everybody has a slightly different experience, and some patients
can tolerate pain or discomfort far more than other patients. Dave

I had RNY on 8/26/08 and I get hungry too but I do fill up quickly. I do
not dump at all, ever, but I do get cramps from gas. Lots of things hurt to
eat but I can eat that dried Lipton chicken noodle soup if I feel nauseated
so I just sip a half of a cup of it with some noodles (it comes with some
noodles.) That seems to help. We do have to learn alternatives to eating; I
have decided to go for a very short walk just around my court when I feel
an urge to eat just to make sure it is not "head hunger" and that
really works. Good luck.

38 pounds @ 9 weeks = 4.22 pounds a week! (.06 lbs/day).
What better progress could you have gotten anywhere else?
Keep things in perspective!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't want you to think that my answer was rude or curt... about keeping
things in perspective. I too, thought I was loosing weight way too slow
until I did the breakdown of the stats. By doing that, it has given me a
whole different way of looking at things and has helped my attitude about
what the surgery really is... which is one tool to use among many. Good
Luck!

I am 6 weeks post op and have problems iwth meats as well. My doctor told
me to stick to protein that swims or flies (basically poultry and fish) -
but regardless, it turns to eat it unless it is very moist - mix it with
some broth. Otherwise it is just too dry. Also, be sure you don't drink
anything 30 minutes prior to eating and for an hour after eating as the
fluids will wash the food out of your stomach sooner and make you hungry in
a very short time. You are doing great. Keep up the good work! It does
slow down - I was at a plateau for a couple weeks, and then this past week
have only lost a couple pounds. But I also know I need to exercise more -
this is another important component. I know it is difficult with a cold - a week after my surgery I came down
with one as well and there was no way I could get the protein shakes down -
started drinking the bullets and the isopure protein water - but I did
water them down quite a bit - this way I got my fluids and protein in. So
hang in there - it will be getting better soon.

I think you are being harder on yourself than you need to be...You are
doing fine! I do have a suggestion though...it seems you have found comfort
in slider foods and they are soooo much easier to get down...That is why
eating one ounce of meat is all you can handle. That dense meat is what
will sustain your hunger for more than 2 hours...If one ounce is all you
can handle than only do one ounce for now...But make your main meals dense
proteins and not softer cottage cheese and yogurts...These empty out of you
pouch far too fast...You can add soft cooked veggies to help the meat slide
a little...but not enough to be hungry too soon...After an hour, start
drinking a lot of water in between meals...Often I find I think I am hungry
and I am just thirsty...Don't eat foods that you know you can, JUST because
you know you can. I have a limit but I can tolerate quite a bit of sugar
and fat too! I just don't often. I want the cookies over the fruit
cup...or the pasta over the grilled veggies...Or the mashed potatoes over
the sweet potato...or the bread over the salad with lite vinegarette rather
than Ranch...but my need to stay healthy and fit and not become MO is
something I remind myself of daily when i wake. I am so grateful to be
thin and healthy and so active for my age, where before I could barely walk
with a cane and without being winded and in pain. I don't think you are
doing anything wrong...but it might be time to graduate to denser
protein...Just make sure that you have protein snacks like your cottage
cheeese and yogurt inbetween too! With only one ounce of meat per
meal...that may not be enough protein daily...so you probably need supps
until you can eat 2-4 ounces of meat a meal or eat several small meals like
this daily, but try to spread them out to every 3-4 hours if you can...I
eat about every 3 hours...and I eat like a normal small person (My Nut and
surgeon are also like yours in that we should eat and live normally) I
lost 150 lbs in 15 months...I didn't think I'd get this far either! I would
have been happy at 200...When i had my surgery at 315 lbs...I knew the
normal weight loss was 100 lbs...It was a pleasant surprise that I lost
150....I maintain that loss eating normal foods (simple carbs and sugar in
moderation)...You are doing it! And you are doing fine without a
"diet"...You have a diet to follow...The one that came with your
surgery...It's truly that simple sweetie! So try some softer meats at
first...Stewed meats are softer than say baked...If you boil a chicken
(like in a soup) the meat is moister and eaiser to get down...The soft
veggies help too...Fish is soft too but dense enough to sustain you for
more than 2 hours...Try to find a nice baked fish that you like... Pre Op I
hated fish...Now I love baked white fishes like "chilean sea
bass" (my fav), Orange roughy, tilapia, salmon (my least fav, wouldn't
even poke it with my fork pre-op!) Fish is a nice lean meat with low cals
and fat (has good fats like omega 3's) and high protein! Canned chicken
and turkey is moist too and fast and easy if you don't have a lot of time.
Or crock pot meals ! You just put in all the ingredients and leave for 4-8
hours...come home and dinner is ready! So try some new ideas with denser
protein and see if that doesn't help! You can find crock pot flavor packets
in the gravy and spices section if you need help with recipes and flavor!
Good luck!

You lost 38llbs in 9 weeks, that is great! everyone is different!
I am almost 1 year post op I was 309 when I went into surgery, and weigh
186 today! I started out slow too, and also hated to exercise. But, I was
religious on following the plan the doc gave me, and I didn't loose right
away either, I also got discourgaed too! So I hear ya, I hated the protein
drink too, but try either the protein drink from Curves or the Unjury, they
are pretty good, I always stick in more milk and add ice to the protein
drink, so instead of it being 8 oz its like 16 oz, and that usuakky sticks
with me, also in bewteen meals make sure you get your fluids in, for
getthing in your protein in, what about fish, tuna, eggs, beans, refried
beans, low fat cheese, I would getting your protein in a priority along
with
your fluids, the protein will help your muscles, and also makes you feel
full longer and faster, when I was at that stage I would eat some tunafish
with some mayo, some cherry tomatoes, and maybe a couple of spoonfuls of
yogurt that would fill me uop, then I would wait about 1/2 hour and drink
my protein drink, or milk. I wouldn't crave sweets, once you start that
your body craves the empty carbs, and that is how I got to where I was
before my surgery. yeah once in a while I will have a bite of something but
I don't make it a habit, You don;t have to have meat atevery meal either,
and if you do
try some lean turkey, or chicken, cook it ubtil it is supper tender, also
chew , chew, chew until its mush, that may help
maybe your not chewing your food up completely and then its getting kinda
stuck, where it has to break down. With veggies, try raw veggies dipped in
low cal dressing, or a salad with shredded chicken, (that could be a meal)
I know that I am constantly eating because I don't eat until I am full
either, I
eat a late breakfast, then a late lunch, a very light dinner, then I do a
protein drink in the evening, plus I am constantly drinking. I probably can
go 6 hours or more without eating or dronking because you just don't feel
like eating. But, try the chicken, turkey or tuna, and chew as much as yoou
can.
If you need extra help, i can do so! just email me at

Catherine, tell me the last time you lost 38 pounds in 9 weeks? You are
doing fine. Everyone is different. Be faithfull, press forward and
exercise, diet and drink your water, and you will lose. If you neglect
exercise, you slow down your own progress, eating alone will not do it
forever, and will eventually set you back. You must exercise. The choice
is yours. You made the decision to have the surgery, I encourage you to
take on the full plan, diet, exercise and drink plenty of water. Take
care. Patricia P.

cathy, congrats on your success. although i am not a doctor, you should
know that meat is the hardest for your stomach to digest (wheter before
your surgery or now). at 9 weeks i feel you should be getting your protein
from shakes and not meats. if you are having no luck with your current
protein powder, try this one.

good luck, and if you need more advice on the protein you can call me or
email me direct at 954 328 7135 [email protected]
