Question:
Should I go to my family doctor or bariatric surgeon for my six month diet?
Can you do all the pre-op appointments and do the 6 month suppervised diet by the surgeon and do it at the same time? I'm new to this and I'm a little confussed. I just don't know if I should go to my family doctor first before I start the rest Thank you for anyhelp you can give me. Sonya — slcompton (posted on September 16, 2008)

I did my supervised 6 months diet with the nut/dietician at the baratrics
office. All my family doctor did is give me the referral, which I really
didn't need per my insurance.

I went to my family doctor for the referral. I went to a nutritionist
under the care of the surgeon for the 6 months. After the 6 months the
nutritionist gave me the notes she had taken and the plans we had made,
there was a signature line for my primay doctor to sign and a copy for him
to keep for my records. This way I was covered at both places. Going to
the nutritionist at the office of the surgeon preprared me for pre and post
sugery.

i did it by accident...I went to WW for 6 months and the insurance company
accepted that as my 6 months supervised diet. I didn't even need proof,
even though it was there if I needed it. You might calll and ask if you've
already done one of the many weight loss programs and stuck to it for a
while.

First I looked for an center of Excellences. Then I went to an intro meeting
At wich tome the surgeon explained all the
options. Then I had an meeting with the sergon who I selected
from three on staff. We decided on lap band for an number of reason. Then an
meeting with the dietitian at which time
she set me up with an pre-op diet. The next step was to talk.
to the Psychologist.Once cleared the surgery date was set.
I met again with the dietitian and she gave me the pre op diet.
Oh I han an meeting with the excerise Physilogist.
Many family doctors do not understand the process.
The center took care of all hospitalization approvals.
I am 3 mo. out and have lost 58lb.Go to the Fitness Center
Every day fot 1 and 1half hr. The Center of Exc is the keyfor me.Good luck
on jour journey to an better life. All my meds are gone or cut in half.

I did just that. I started in Jan. of 08 with a local dietician. It was
through the hospital. I did have to get a referral from my primary doc. I
only had to meet with the dietician once a month and weigh in and discuss
what changes I had made over the last month. I done all of my preop
appointments and blood work and by the time the 6 months were up, all I had
to do was some bloodwork done. Don't worry, things will go fine. I wish
you the best of luck! Ed Pankowski

I'm having to do a 3-mo. medically supervised diet. I'm doing that with my
family doctor. The bariatric nurse told me that they won't schedule me for
my initial consult with the surgeon until I complete the 3-mo. diet...

I was referred by my PCP after being treated for "weight" issues
for years. I did not have to do a 6 month "diet" I would check
with PCP, surgeon and insurance to see what they require. Good Luck!
