Question:
"Back to the Basics??" 5yrs out and need help losing again..
I had my surgery in Sept 2002. I lost and of course now, I gained back 30 lbs. I am thinking that maybe I should just go back and do the basics, but........tell me some ideas what the basics are. Does this work??? I joined WW's a month ago and I did lose 3lbs but I am not to excited about it. I want to do what is best for me as a RYN gastric bypass patient. Any suggestions? Any hints?? I never did reach my goal weight and I still have a BMI of 40.5. Not to good!! Help!!!!! Robin — robinans (posted on August 28, 2007)

Hi Honey....first off, let me say that you did great to get the weight off
to begin with - don't beat yourself up over it. Secondly, cutting calories
and exercise always seem to be the best advice I've heard or given myself.
Stick to the rules of WLS - for every 100 calories, only 3 grams of fat and
6 grams of sugar. Get lots of protein in - one bite of carb/veggie/fruit
for every three bites of protein. If that fails, go back to the liquid diet
for a week or two to jump start the weight loss again. I know it's an awful
answer, but when it doubt, liquid diet. Also, while I was a the surgeon's
office there were women who had RNY and were going in for a lap band and
vise versa, something to look into; if you are desperate and qualify. Good
luck.

There is a site called "Living After Weight Loss Surgery" They
have a 5 day pouch test, to get back to basics. Alot of the people on the
California Board are doing it. Check it out. It's liquids 2 days, soft
proteins, firm proteins and then solid proteins..Good Luck. Lori

I would suggest to call your surgeon's office. Some have a "getting
back on track" support group.

I am not saying you should do this, but do consider it. Get a revision to a
duodenal switch if you feel the RnY has failed you. Go back to your surgeon
and ask her if you would qualify. I am in the process of trying to get
revision and the DS is the way to go, not lapband for sure.

Hi Robin,
I can so relate to where you are right now and I commend you for your
courage to reach out after 5yrs. Weight loss is a lifelong challenge for
many of us especially if we had to go to the measures we did to get the
weight off. As I saw it mentioned to not beat yourself up is the first and
most important thing because there are no guarantees in life and we each
have to stay on the uphill battle.
Suggestions, ? I'm sort where you are right now. I had my RYN back in
Sept./2003 and lost 126lbs in total but never reached my ideal weight
either. This past year I suffered a tragic loss and experienced
PTSD/Depression and was prescribed anti-depressants. I've been taking them
for a year and since have gained 25lbs and now I need to lose in total 45
to 50lbs to reach my ideal weight and my bmi is 31.
My eating habits have not changed for the most part, I still eat small
portions and get full quick. I drink 64ozs of water daily and my vitamins.
The downfall with the depression has been the loss of energy and the desire
to exercise, which I used to, but even then I was plateau and not really
losing? I also suffer from severe anemia which keeps me fatigued alot. I
was considering seeing my surgeon about a revision? I'm told people have
done that and I don't know what it entails but I plan to look into.
Healthy diet I do for the most part, the only bad habit I've picked back up
is snacks here and there which at first sugar would upset my stomach and I
couldn't tolerate it and now I can.

Hi Robin, I am 5 years post op and had regained 30 lbs from my lowest and
even my lowest was not near my goal. I recently thought about looking into
a revision but then I really searched my soul and came to terms with the
fact that I myself had not really followed the eating rules nor exercised
along the way. 2 months ago I decided to start trying to do things better.
I eat mostly protein through out the day, small spaced out meals. thinks
like hard boiled eggs, deli slices, low fat cheese, yogurt. I eat a nice
dinner protein & veggies or beans. I allow an evening snack like fruit
or peanut butter (in moderation). I dont let too many carbs sneak in the
house because I truly am unable to resist them. The main focus for me has
been regular exercise, almost every day if possible. usually 45 minutes to
an hour of cardio and some arm weights. I usually do an in home walking
video that you can do up to 4 miles in an hour. I have lose 23 of the 30
lbs regained. And actually because of the exercise level, I am fitting
into some of my lowest weight close now, even my batwings are noticeably
shrinking. So give it a shot, believe me if this old gal found the
willpower to change anyone can. You just have to realize that it is a life
time commitment. Oh yeah, one more thing, I had to banish the scale. It
was bringing me down. I tend to lose in strange spurts with even some
weight gain after a loss spurt and it gets really frustrating. I weigh
once every 2 weeks and try to judge my progress by the way my clothes fit.
Good Luck! Rosemary

Hi Robin,
I had my gastric in Feb 2002. I have also gained 30pds, I recently had
surgery last week because I was having some pain. Turns out nothing is
wrong but my doctor did go in and tighten my pouch. I'm back to the
basics, I do feel there's some difference of when I first had my surgery
like I do get hungry and can tolerate sugar and milk which I wasn't able to
before. I do think I need to join WW also because I don't think I'm strict
enough on what I eat and how much of it I eat. I can't wait to start
working out again. Please contact me and we can get through this together.

Thanks to everyone for their input. You know, when you get back to doing
what is required, water, protein, little carbs, exercise you reall aren't
hungry. Today I drank two Herbalife shakes for breakfast and lunch, had a
piece of string cheese for mid afternoon snack and then for dinner, I had
4ozs of grilled chicken and probably 5 bites of grilled vegetables. I was
full and now I am not even hungry for an evening snack. I did my vitamins
too. So, maybe I just need to work on my protein, cut carbs!! I have been
in touch with the PA at my surgeons office and she is sending my scripts to
get lab work checked , to gt b-12 shots again and iron. Also, I am getting
an appointment with the dietican again and seeing my surgeon. I CAN DO
THIS!!!! Deep down, I would like a revision and maybe that is what I need
eventually but I AM the one who gave in to the sugars not many protein and
no vitamins. I need to change taht, because I will still need to do that
revsion or not. I am healthy so far, why mess with that? At least I think
so. I will find out. thanks again!
