Question:
why have i put on weight since i had a hernia repair in september of 2005?
I had gastric bypass roux n y in 2002, i had gotten down to 199 pounds in last august. however, on 9-5-05, I had to have emergency hernia repair. i have since put on this weight. i am now up to 245 pounds again. is this common? what does nayone do once they start putting on weight? can we get it off again or are our insides just a mess for this to happen? — lw72810212 (posted on April 10, 2006)

Hi there - hernia repair is not a weight gain byproduct. Since you got down
to your 199, which is great, have you continued to stick to your food
protocol, weighing at least once a week, of have you strayed off the path a
tad? The only way not to regain the weight is to stay the course- try
going back to your basics. It should start coming off again. In the
meantime, speak with your surgeon and your nutritionist and they can help
with a plan. Good luck Cindi - 223#

I tend to feel that this is just the normal course of wls rather than
related to the hernia repair. You are now 4 years out and obviously at 3
years were still trying to lose since you indicated you had just gotten
down to 199, so I suspect it is just that you may have relaxed your eating
slightly. And depending on how big the hernia was, having it repaired may
have made your pants looser which might have given you a false sense of
security. Just throwing out possibilities. No one can tell you for sure,
but I'd suspect they are unrelated...Dina

The weight gain is due to the fact that your surgery isn't quite as
effective as it was in that the villi may be growing stronger in your
intestine. Also you may be eating more. There is a "back on
track" program that is online, a group if you will. But there is also
a schedule, allowing for pills and vitamins, and water, and high protein
drinks and 1 to 3 oz of protein all spaced about 2 to 3 hours apart. One
follows this plan and retrains the body to get back into loosing weight.
It also retrains the bad eating habits that may have reared their ugly
heads. it is called " the karen B's "timer plan for getting back
on track".
6 am-coffee, tea or some other kind of warm beverage, do not go past 1 1/2
hours between some kind of feeding.
7 am-8 or more oz of pure water
8 am-protein shake
9am 1-3 oz of protein type food
10 am-8 or more oz of pure water
11 am-protein shake
12noon- 1-3 oz protein food
1 pm-8 or more oz of pure water
2 pm-protein shake
3 pm-1-3 oz protein food
4 pm-8 or more oz water
5 pm-protein shake ( while cooking dinner-prevents grazing and tasting)
6 pm- dinner-1-3 oz food total-ie. 2 oz protein food, a bite or two of
vegee, and a taste of complex carb
7 pm-8 or more oz of pure water
8 pm-protein shake
9 pm- light snack like string cheese, deli meat or cheese, about 1 or 2 oz
total
10 pm, 8 or more oz of pure water
take your vitamins and pills with your water or shakes as prescribed, you
can make high protein shakes with one scoop making it 20 gm of protein just
so you get in a total of 90 gm of protein from shakes.
pure water is so important and you must have at least 64 oz
you can set the timer, and you will never get hungry. all meals must have
a beginning and an end, of 15 to 20 minutes only, if you are full in 5
minutes, stop and discard the rest of the food. After 20 minutes it is
grazing. I find this works well for me. maril

I had ventral hernia repair BEFORE having lap Roux en Y surgery. I gained
50 lbs after that surgery. I can't explain why but this I can tell you.
Recovering from hernia surgery was 2 or 3 times more difficult than gastric
bypass surgery.
