Question:
Has anyone lost weight that has had hip replacements and had trouble with the hips

becomming unstable as if they are coming out, maybe from the lost of fat or tissue around the replacements? I am having trouble with my hips only after I had lost 40+ lbs in 2 1/2 mo. Please Help Anyone....    — T R. (posted on March 14, 2010)

I am at the beginning of my weight loss journey. I have had a left hip resurfacing (less bone loss than a total hip) and am getting close to having my right one done. The weight loss should not really affect the hip capsule, but I am wondering if you can describe your pain a bit more fully including how far you are post hip replacement. I personally feel the extra weight does help the prosthesis set better, but once set, you should not be having trouble unless you are far enough out (10+) years to need a revision.

I have some hip pain issues generally... haven't had a replacement or resurfacing but imagine that's in my future. I will say that I have noticed with the weight loss that it does seem to change my posture... and I'm getting aches in new places as my body adjusts. If may be that your body's changing posture is affecting how your hip feels. Perhaps it will feel better in time as your body adjusts to the new positions you're standing in (I know I don't lean back as far as I used to to compensate for my big tummy, for example...).

Greg, that actually makes a lot of sense. I know resurfacing is a harder recovery than a total hip due to the manipulation. It takes about 10 months for the muscles to fire in proper sequence again. A changing posture means the muscles are having to adapt again.

I had left hip replacement about 8 years ago, and BEFORE starting to lose weight on my own to meet the insurance precertification requirements, my right hip began hurting in the same way that the left one was before the hip replacement. It continues to hurt as I lose weight, although I think it is more exericise-induced pain from irritating the joints than anything else. I have not had the lap band yet and now I am under the >40BMI requirement that my Bariatric Center and insurance require for me to have it, so I am going to hold off and continue to try and lose on my own. I have lost 26 lbs since mid-December and I am on a roll... if I can do this on my own, I had certainly rather do it that way if I can. If I slip though (dont trust myself... been there, done that too many times in the past), I will pick up where I left off and go ahead and have the surgery.
