Question:
Biotin capsule & hair perm question

Goodmorning, Is it ok to take a biotin capsule? Will it disolve in tummy? I had RNY on Sept 18,2007. Also My hair is falling, I have thin hair as it is, Do you think it would be okay to have perm done? I thank everyone that responds. My labs came back all good.    — nanacindy (posted on February 28, 2008)

I take 2000mg of biotin daily, had RYN on Jan 29, 2008. Dr was okay with taking it, also stressed the importance of 60-80g of protein. I don't know about the perm.

I don't know what biotin is so I can't answer that but I have had a few perms since my surgery a year ago. I didn't have too much problem with my hair falling out but what did come out eventually stopped. They say at about 6 months post-op it will quit. Only one perm that I had didn't "take" but we aren't sure if it had to do with my surgery or the perm itself. We re-did it and boy did it take then!! I bet it would be safe to try. I say "I'ts only hair and will grow back". Good luck.

My perms have taken just fine since I have had my RNY July '07. My hair loss has just now slowed down but I do not have any regrowth yet. Christine

My surgeon recommends taking Biotin for a month or two prior to surgery and 4-6 months post op. Capsules dissolve in most people's pouch. I would avoid taking several medication in capsule form if possible though. Liquids are best, pills second, capsules third.

I have taken biotin since day 1 after surery! I use lozenges...But anything in capsules I do not take as when they get stuck...they really drive me insane and only hot tea will help...I open all capsules if they can be pulled apart and swallow with water, yogurt or SF applesauce...anything that will diquise taste and slide it down quickly! Biotin is a great hair and nail supplement as well as it help break down proteins that you eat! My nutrionist recommended it as a "bonus" supplement. I still take it. Getting in as much water as you can also helps with hair and nails. Anita

Check with your doc first. The way to tell if the pill will dissolve and in how long is to drop it in a cup of water and see right before your eyes. I have an amazing product for nutrition. contact me. I wouldn't perm your hair until it is strong!!

I started taking 2, biotin capsules in the morning and 2 capsules in the evening before bed at about 4 months out. (I am now almost a year post op). Each capsule is 5000 mcg. (So that's 20 mgs a day as 5000 MCG =5 mgs). I've never had a problem taking pills and can take all of mine at once and they have never gotten stuck. (1 Centrum, 1 atenolol, 1 b-12, 1 calcium citrate and then I take the 2 biotin in a seperate swallow). It really helps my re-growth come in much much faster, and my nails also love it. It won't prevent your hair from falling out but it does help the re-growth immensely. You also NEED to make sure you get at LEAST 70 mgs of protein each and every single day. Your hair falling out means the damage has already been done, and nothing in the world is going to stop it. I have heard good and bad about perming your hair, but I certainly wouldn't at this point. You could only damage it more. My hair is still occasionally thining out (thank good ness I started out with thick hair though) and I am almost a year out. I've always gotten at least 70 mgs of protein each day, but it just happens with some people. I was also heavier than most (509 lbs the day of surgey) and I've lost 146 lbs faster than most, so I'm assuming my hair is freaking out about that. SMALL price to pay for such a great tool! Good luck, and God bless!

A perm should not damage your hair in any way. At least that is what I hear from my stylist. The reviews on Biotin for hair loss is "mixed", but I noticed I have kick ass nails once again. I think most important for the hair loss is the protein. I do the capsules for my Biotin and vitamins (6 of those) and have no trouble. I think "Bariatric Advantage" makes their vitamins in that "form" for the absorption factor. So many of the "coated" vitamins are nowadays labeled "Time Released" and WE don't do well with that.

I use a sublingual lozenge made by Solaray. They are 1000mcg. each & I take 2 daily. I purchased them at a grocery store called Henry's (Wild Oats in some places) but you may also be able to find it online. idia

I took biotin for a long time after my surgery and eventually changed over to GNC's Hair, Skin and Nail vitamins which is part of my daily supplement regime. I am 46 years old and I'm post op 5 years. I had your regular heriditary hair loss starting about 30 and it tappered off. I began loosing more hair about 4 months post op, but it stopped about 3 months later. It slowly returned and at 5 years post op, I think I have regained all my hair that was lost since my surgery. Give it time and maintain your protein intake. I'd not recommend a perm. Your hair is already fragile. I might feel safe having one at this point, but I'm not willing to risk it! My hair looks as good now as it did before the surgery. I now sport a shorter style with highlights using chemicals that my hairdresser assures me are very gentle. Good luck to you and I hope this helps!

I would'nt perm your hair anytime soon especially if your hair is falling out......................make sure you are getting your protein and that will help with the hair loss as well as the biotin.! been there done that!
