Question:
Dieter's Tea for Constipation?- Another question included.
I'm 3 weeks post op and have awful constipation (I'm sure it's due to the pain medicine) but I know I should go this long for a BM. I was told to try Milk of Magnesia and it isn't working very well. Should I try some diluted Dieter's tea. Second question- When does this swollen "Pregnant" feeling subside on the left side, I hate it. — AmpleH (posted on July 22, 2007)

What about citrate magnesium?? The day before my surgery the dr told me to
take that to clean my system out.

you can also try fleets phos soda it tastes bad but works. you need to
talk with the doc though these things can be hell on your intestines and
cause severe cramping which he may not want you to have. You should be on
a stool softner like colace it does not stimulate but makes stools soft.
As for the gas if you had lap it just needs time to absorb, but being
constipated only adds to the pain it builds gas in the bowels. So best to
talk with the md

I, too, had constipation so bad it was becoming uncomfortable. Doc said
fluids, fluids, fluids and exercise, exercise, exercise. He was right-it
worked after about a day and a half (after trying BeneFiber, ExLax,
Colace...)

I deal with constipation a lot lately , mine is due to the large amount of
iron I am taking to get my ferritin level up. I don't know about using the
tea so early out of surgery. I didn't have issues that early on. I know
friends who didn't have the surgery but use that tea for the same
reason(constipation) and always get some cramping while taking it before it
actually works and releases the block. I think like the others ask your
doctor what is best first but I think if you use Benefiber or Miralax(it's
new RX strength with out the RX). on a regular basis you would be in better
shape. I also have heard of friends using The emmas when they are relly
constipated to loosen things up. Good Luck.

Hi HD, thanks for writing. Constipation is such an awful thing. There is
an over the counter (although I get mine by perscription) item that does
help very well. It is called Miralax. It is a laxitive, but it is NOT
habitforming, so you can take it every day if you need to. It is a powder
that you mix with a liquid, I used a small amount of juice, but it has NO
flavor to it. It really works well. I will tell you though, I used only a
half dose because after 3 days on a full dose I was in severe gas pain, so
I only use a half dose when I need to. I would talk to your surgeon and
give it a try. You are right that pain meds bind you up pretty good. I
would call your surgeon about the swelling on the left side, I think that
might not be a usual thing, and I don't know what to say about that other
than I don't think it is normal and you should contact your surgeon right
away about that. Take care, Patricia P.

Using the Dieter's Tea right now may not be so good, it's pretty strong and
you may have some pretty sever cramping from it....I don't think that would
be so good so soon after surgery....I had really bad gas after surgery and
had problems going to the bathroom....My doctor suggested I try the
laxitive Senakot....It's a natural laxitive and the cramping is minimal if
any and you can get it from any grocery or drug store....It worked me with
no problems and I felt a lot better....Good Luck....

Hey you guys, you're Awesome, Thanks for getting back at me. I spoke to
the surgeon's Assistant this morning and she said that the Tea was not a
good idea just like you said but told me to try Benefiber and if that
didn't work after two days to try Miralax just like you said. And as far as
the pregnant swollen feeling on the left, it's normal. Everyone heals
differently and it's just the healing going on.

Have you've had any BMs since your surgery date? If not then get to your
surgeon ASAP!! I had a Hernia strangulating my intestines 5 days post-op
and almost died. Don't put this off any longer.

First of all, are you drinking all your fluid? This is extremely important.
I used Miralax very early on for constipation and it works very well. I am
now 5 months post op and have no trouble with constipation, however I do
eat at least 2 fruits and 2 veggies daily! It will get better!
