Question:
What to eat after surgery

I am hoping to have surgery soon (if approved by the insurance). With this as my prayer, I am trying to get information on what to expect immediately after surgery. What will I be recommended to eat? I am just looking for suggestions for when I return to work as well. Any recipes, suggestions???? I appreciate any help.    — csanmiguel01 (posted on July 2, 2007)

Your surgeon should give you a list of different foods and phases of what to eat and when and etc. Right after surgery you will be on full fluids, then pureed foods, then soft foods, then as you can tolerate - reg foods. Think of being a baby and starting from scratch - all over again. That is basically the steps. Going back to work in the beginning was a bit hard, but once I got my route down, it was all good. Make things at home and bring in left overs from the night's meal before. Buy small TV dinners. Bring soup. Things that are easily warmed up in the microwave, etc.

There are different stages of foods you will be eating. Your nutritionist will give you all that information. Good luck and God Bless!

I am having the surgery on August 28th but from what I understand you are on liquids until the 6th week after surgery. Check with your dietician he/she will help you.

I had the RNY on June 6. Until a week ago I was on the same liquids and proteins as I was before the surgery. I am now in the pureed stage. Which my dietician said we do not have to puree as long as you eat soft foods and chew them very very well. You still have to focus first on Protein (as you will have to for the rest of your life). This stage they say things like eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, soft fish, shrimp, scallops, crab, tuna fish, beans & lentils, refried beans, tender cooked ground poultry, beef & pork, luncheon meats, cheese, tofu These are all low fat, lean. Don't worry you will have plenty of choices and you won't be eating much at all anyway - compared to before.

Your surgeon should give you all that information, and your hospital may as well. Doctors have different ideas. I was on liquids for about six weeks, then very soft foods. You will find you do not want to eat mcuh. You need to give your stomach time to heal.
