Question:
Pre-op diet question, and I need high protein recipes.
I need some recipes, and suggestions as to how you substitute the white flour, sugar, potatoes, and bread in your life now?? I am on the pre-op diet, and so far doing pretty good. Since Feb.2,2006,I have lost 17 lbs. and a total of 25 lbs. since first starting my journey. Has anyone been told they can loose the weight on their own if they loose really good on this pre-op diet??? I was told by a friend that a patient from her office was had her surgery cancelled after loosing 60 lbs. on the pre-op diet. Anyone heard of this????? Thanks...Paula J. — pcjacobus (posted on March 8, 2006)

We werent required to lose any weight pre op- but my PCP had told me 3
months before WLS I was diabetic ( which I wasnt) so I stopped all sugars,
breads, potatos, rice and pastas. I lost 52 lbs before surgery and even
till this day, almost 2 years post op, I still don't eat them and never
even thought about a substitute for them, they are just not important to
me. If I want a tablespoon of pasta, then I make a tablespoon, but I am
just not the rule, many other post ops still eat those things, just in
moderation and only what their nuts and surgeons advise. Dense protein is
good, chicken, turkey etc, watch the fat, you will learn you can cook
without all the junk added, and things will be just as delicious.
Remember, for every menu loaded with calories, fats and carbs can be made
to suit your new lifestyle- you never have to be without taste, flavor and
substance to you meals. Good luck

I have never heard of anyone being denied for losing weight pre-op. One of
the most common issues for mobidly obese people is the inability to keep
the weight off, not just lose it. I have personally lost over 100 pounds
twice in my life and then gradually put it back on.
With the NIH report supporting Gastric Bypass due to the success of
weight loss and more importantly, maintenance of that weight loss, I can't
imagine any insurance company denying anyone for having lost a good amount
pre-op.
Of course, some of these insurance companies are unscrupulous, so
anything is possible.
Good luck.

Paula,
I lost 60 lbs before my surgery and I was approved in 2 days. It is not
about the amount of weight loss it is whether or not your BMI is still over
the regulation whether it be 35 with comorbidities or 40 without any. That
is the only time I've heard of them denying surgery. I had people tell me
when I had lost 55 lbs that I should stop trying to lose weight for the
same reason. Don't stop trying to lose the weight the less weight you have
the better off you will be, your body will be better prepared to go through
the surgery. Good luck on your journey.

Hi, I am currently in the stages of getting approval for WLS and wasnt
aware that there was a diet for pre-ops. Would anyone like to share the
diet they were given? I would love to try and lose some weight before the
surgery.

Thank you all so much for your responces to my question. I will continue on
my weighloss journey. I feel much better with the weight I have lost thus
far. But am looking forward to being able to do much more. My little girl
loves Mommy being able to go walking with her now. I want to get on the
play equipment with her at the park, that would be soooo much fun for me to
see her little face light up. I have my appt. with the nutritionist
3/20/06,so I will know more about how I'm doing then. Thanks for your good
luck wishes, and good luck to all of you on your journey as well. Much love
to OH members....... Paula J.
