Question:
What to have for breakfast??????
I have to be at work at 6:30 AM every day and I never have time for breakfast. Does anyone have any ideas on what to have? I am 17 mo post op RNY.. Eggs and any kind of meat makes my feel sick.. I am worried that I am not getting enough protein. SO I just have a protein shake and watermelon every morning. ITs getting very old. I tried almonds but can't stand them much either. HELP!!!! Thanks Buffy — okbuffy (posted on September 17, 2009)

Hey Buffy -
I too have a hard time in the morning finding something to eat - I have to
be at work at 7AM and I have an almost 2 yr old toddler, so before I leave
is still difficult. One thing I grab is a few oz of skim ricotta, mix in a
splenda, and add some berries or even 1/2 a banana. For extra protein to
give me a great start to the day, I add a scoop of protein powder as well
(the shakes make me too full to eat, so I try to add it to sf pudding,
mashed potatoes w cheese, yogurt, ricotta, cottage cheese, etc). I have to
eat first thing or it screws up my blood sugar for the 1st half of the day,
so I typically make this ahead of time - double bonus!!! I also eat cottage
cheese w/tomato or apples with cheese. My last thing is a hard boiled egg
and a mini light yogurt (those weekly packs, less than 4g sugar). I have a
really hard time with scrambled eggs unless I mix in some velveeta (loved
them before surgery, now they just gross me out), but the hard boiled eggs
work. Not sure if you've tried eggs in many different ways, but I the last
thing I eat (and it always satisfies) is a frittata. It took me a while to
find good things to eat for breakfast, but I've been making it work. Good
luck, and I hope this helped!

Dear Buffy, I too can not always tolerate eggs, but have boiled a few eggs
and eat on way to work and have done fine. Also try instant oatmeal you can
cook in microwave while you're getting ready. Some people also add some
protein powders to that. Also special K cereal has a high protein version I
sometimes eat with skim milk, and sometimes add fruit. Also greek yogurt
has high amounts of protein, vanilla lowest in sugar content.Or you could
try toast with peanut butter, or protein bar. I'll eat those on way to work
when running late.I'm nut much of a breakfast person anyway. Hope you find
something that works. Sincerely, JoAnn

I trade of between protein shakes and oatmeal. You can buy instant oatmeal
and mix it with fortified milk for more protein and I add protein powder to
boost the amount of protein in the oatmeal.

I have a pack of plain instant oatmeal with a 1/3 cup skim milk powder to
kick up protein and I add some raisins. I then usually have a protein bar
w/ 15g protein about two hours later, some mornings I will have 6 oz of
orange, grape or apple juice.

I am about 1 year post RNY and agree breakfast can be an issue. I LOVE
greek yogurt and have it mixed with fruit or crumble a protein bar on top
to give it some crunch. It is loaded with protein and I think it tastes
wonderful. Also I make "Bites" from the web site "The worls
accorrding to eggface". She has some wonderful ideas!!

Sometimes I just eat a chunk of lowfat cheese. Or 1 slice of peanut butter
toast. Have you tried walnuts instead of almonds or some other nut you
might like better. There are also some tasty protien bars Special K makes
some and so does snickers. I hope you find something that works.

I also have to be to work early. I mix 6 oz vanillia a scoope of protein
and 16 or 18 oz of hot coffee... I am a caffeene junkie in the am but need
to start with some protein or I am "off" all day.... It reminds
me of a vanilla latte and I throw it in a travel mug and drink it in the
car. then on my morning break I eat some yogurt with granola....

I have to be to work by 7am, but I carpool...so I am in the office at
6:15-6:30am - OUCH. I have a microwave at work to make some of this work.
Things I eat for breakfast:
-oatmeal (eat this most days)
-special K cereral w/1% milk
-toast w/peanut butter
-saltines w/peanut butter
-yogart w/granola (dannon light and fit)
-cheese
- applesauce
-dannon light and fit smoothies (wear yogart is sold).
-special K waffle (toaster required) w/peanut butter or sf syrup - waffles
are frozen.
-1/2 english muffin, 2 strips turkey bacon, light cream cheese fold in 1/2
- make like a taco - little breakfast "burrito"
-cup of soup
-orange juice (or any fruit juice - use sparingly though, high is sugar)
-v eight juice
-lunch meat/cheese - lay out flat, add some light cream cheese to meat, lay
cheese over, roll, cut into "bites" - just pop em' in your mouth
running out the door or in the car. also works with lunch meat, light cream
cheese and a pickle. YUM!
-I am sure there are more... but that's off the top of my head - top of my
list of things that work for me.
feel free to email me at [email protected] for more suggestions and
conversation.
I add scoop of protein powder (unflavored) to everything I can in addition
to the smart balance butter w/omega's to get essential fats.

When I have to be somewhere in a hurry, I grab a CARBmaster yogurt from
Kroger, add a tablespoon of Nutricology ground flaxseed to it, stir it
well, and eat it right away (otherwise the ground flaxseed makes it kind of
"rubbery"). That way, I'm getting in my protein with LOW carbs,
and also at least some of my fiber. Another thing you can try is Oikos
Plain Greek Yogurt ... I mix in 2 packets of Splenda, 1 tsp of vanilla, and
2 tablespoons of Polaner Sugar-Free Strawberry Preserves with Fiber. It's
delicious, THICK AND CREAMY, and you can make it up the night before. It's
also VERY low in carbs and high in protein.

I would just use the package deli meat thin cut and a stick of string
cheese and roll them up together and nibble on that. You are getting
protein from both items. Try cottage cheese with a fruit in it. A yogurt
with the above items or oatmeal or malt o meal. A lot of these items can
be eaten while on the go. I can't eat meat or scambled eggs very well and
I am 3.5 yrs out. So get the healthy choice deli meat, string cheese, and
the other items and you should do fine. Just remember dairy products have
protein in them too. It doesn't have to be meat or eggs only. The
watermelon is full of water, but I don't know of it nutritional value. You
can google foods that are high in protein. If I can find my list I will
email you again. It is great, it provides a great deal of foods to eat.
Hope this helps.

I'm never hungry in the morning and have definite "food moods" so
it can be hard for me to figure out what to eat, too. If I have time I'll
have a big mug of protein cocoa w/ ff reddi-whip. Most mornings I grab a
protein bar or nibble on a bag of protein pretzels (preferrably kay's
naturals) and a piece of low-fat cheese. If I'm really lucky I'll have a
couple of my mom's homemade cookies-- sounds bad, but they're sugar-free
(though not very sweet) and she loads them w/ whey protein. Two of those is
enough to keep me energized all morning. My other standby is cold, leftover
chicken.

Have you tried pourable liquid eggs in a carton? They sit much easier for
me than regular eggs do. You can also mix eggs with some cottage cheese to
make it thinner. I had that in my pureed stage. Don't be afraid to try
something again at a later time. I've found I can tolerate things now that
use to upset my pouch. Good luck!

CHEERIOS! Love em and they work!

Cheerios? Sure they taste good and they go down easy, but they hardly have
any protein even when you include the milk.
I regularly have Quaker's "Weight Control" instant oatmeal
packets. Each pack has 7 grams of protein & 6 grams of fiber. You add
3/4 cup of milk and you have about 13 grams of protein for breakfast. It
tastes great and its very comforting! I have it all year long, not just
during the cold months.
