Question:
I am planning a wedding for my sister.
We are planning her wedding dinner in the buffet. A few of our guests have had weight loss surgery and one is refusing to go because she won't eat $20 worth of food. A friend said she once heard that if you have had this surgery, and can get a note from your doctor, perhaps the buffet will only charge the child's rate for that particular diner. Does anyone know if this is true. I would love to be able to tell our guests this is an option, because I don't really blame them for not wanting to pay full cost for a meal they can't eat that much of. — celticdreamer (posted on August 25, 2009)

Most people who have WLS do receive a card to present when dining out so
that they may order from the child's menu or just appetizers. If your
guests don't have it they should be able to get another from their doctor.
Good luck with the plans.

First of all shame on you Jen on your rude comment. Don't be so judge
mental until you know the whole story. And shame on your guest for worrying
about getting her money worth. I have also heard of the Dr office giving
you a card. Ask the place where you are going to if they are willing to
reduce the rates for a few of your guests and explain your situation. All
they can say is "no". Good luck with your planning.

This is one of the mindset changes that has to be worked through after
WLS--not being able to eat your money's worth. After WLS you have to decide
that it's ok to go and get something you really enjoy eating, eat what you
can and let the rest go back to the kitchen if you can't/don't wish to take
a "doggie bag."
I would never consider $20 too much to spend to be at a wedding buffet of
someone I consider special even if I only ate one or two bites -- it's
really not about the food or the cost of it.
My doctor does give each of his patients a card that you can show to
restaurants that says you've had weight loss surgery and you can only eat 4
ounces of food. Some restaurants have been willing to go along with this
and others don't seem to care.
Since my surgery I have changed so that now I don't see a meal as having to
get my money's worth but rather a time to be with friends and to eat what I
need to fuel my body. Obese people always found buffets a good
"value" because they could eat as much as the wanted which is one
of the reasons they are obese.

I'm with you Bob. The wedding day isn't about them, it's about your
sister. If they don't like it or want to pay #20 to spend time with
family/friends then let them not attend. I mean I feel the same way in the
fact that I don't want to pay for a buffet when I don't eat that much or
even only one plate, but $20 isn't that much to attend a special day for
someone, and I would NOT ask them to change it or refuse to go based on
that fact alone. These people are being selfish, and need to get over it.

Here's what i would be thinking: "Load up a plate and take it
home," but seriously, $20 bucks isn't too bad. Think of it as paying
for the company. Now $45 might be a little steep if your not eating, at
least for me.

I went to a wedding years ago where the B&G requested people to bring a
pot luck in lieu of a gift. It was great fun and there was a ton of food.
Anyway, I've had to attend some buffets and just brought along my own
container and took some food home. Most places serving buffet won't give
you a doggy bag - so bring your own (anyway, it's good for the
environment). Also, $20 is not a lot to spend time with friends and family.
I figure I probably ate more than $20 worth before i had WLS. Just go and
have fun!

When those wls guests send in their RSVPs, if possible, just mark them down
as a child guest. That way, only a child's meal will be charged for the
wls ppl.

I did get a card from my Dr... most regular resturants that I have been to
will let you order off the kids menu... the best thing to do is to call
the location in advance and ask them.
