Question:
Having a endoscopy done

Hi, I wanted to hear from anyone who has has this endoscopy done so I know what to expect. I am a little nervous about it. My surgeon ordered one due to my being almost 5 years out and suddenly develping belly and upper right quadrant pain as well as nausa. Next week I am having the CT scan of the upper body and abdomin done. I have a strong gag reflex and worried about how they perform this and will I feel anything? Also what kind of risk is involved having this done? Thank you.    — cherby56 (posted on June 23, 2008)

Yes I have done this. The first part of Oct. 2007. Believe me it is NO BIG DEAL. They start a IV and just calm you done. No big deal. It does not hurt and I had no problems. Not even a sore throat. And it takes no time at all. Just go in calm and relax and take deep breaths and take your mind somewhere else. If you have any questions e-mail me at: [email protected] Vickie from Fort Worth TX Have lost 125lbs since Oct. 2007. only 18 more pounds to go. I AM SO HAPPY....

I had an endoscopy done this past February. I had to drink a "cocktail" the day before, someone drove me to the procedure, I was asleep during the whole thing and I awoke when it was over. My friend drove me home and I didn't do anything useful or productive the rest of the day. Marti P.

I had my endoscopy on June 6th. Nice little twilight cocktail and I didn't care what they did to me! In by 12:30, out by 2:00 and eating lunch at 3pm. I spent the rest of the afternoon doing normal activities and felt fine. No worries!

I had the endoscopy last week and no problems. I am having the same pain as you are describing and have not found the source of the problems yet. I have talked to a lot of people 5 years and more post of with this same pain. Hope we find the source soon. Good Luck Linda K

I've had two done now (only one related to WLS) and they're no big deal, trust me. The first one I remember vaguely uncomfortable but tolerable. The second one I don't remember at all! It really depends on the anesthesia used, I guess.

Wow...I am almost 5 years out and having the same symptoms. (Cheryl I remember you from the boards when we were having our surgery around the same time. We were both from AZ. I live in Tx now.) They want to do endoscopy on me as well, I have been a full-time student and have had no insurance so I've been waiting. I hope to have insurance in the next month or so. I am interested in what you find out. They have been treating me for ulcers in the meantime. I haven't had an endoscopy, but I just graduated from nursing school and saw them done during clinicals. They do put you in a twilight sleep just like colonoscopy if you have had that. You will be comfortable. When are you having this done? I am adding you as a friend if that is ok....I would really like to have an update on your progress. Rhonda

I had mine done in February and I went in and they started IV and went to procedure room and they couldn't give me the medicine to make me relax because I was allergic and they deaden my throat and it took longer to program the machine than the procedure...I was in and out in 10 minutes. I was eating when I was released and that was about 30 minutes.

I've had 3 endoscopes with dilation since February. They are pretty easy. They give you an I.V. Then they give you a numbing liquid to gargle (and maybe something to break up gas bubbles). They put a plastic guide in your mouth where they put the scope through, and then inject you with a combination of drugs that puts you in la-la land for a short period of time. Recovery is really quick, too.

I've had two and the anesthesiologist put me under before the tube went down my throat. I didn't remember a thing and, as someone else said, my throat wasn't even sore. What I had was an ulcer which I've come to understand is not uncommon for post-op bypass people. The doctor who did the endoscopies prescribed medicine for it and it is now cured. I hope all goes well for you as well.

I am not sure whether you had the procedure yet, but I have had an endoscopy and they put you to sleep and you don't feel anything. I do remember a moment where I tried to wake up and felt myself gag and throw up water, but I did not feel any pain. The doctor did find two ulcers.
