Question:
Anyone on mental health medications early on post-op?
i was looking into mood stabolizers for my BPD and Bi polar d/o and i found topamax. the side effects say nothing about weight gain. but possibly weight loss. i was wondering if anyone has had any problems with medications for mental health and weight again post- op. im only 3 months out. right now i started taking the sam-e. but i think i need something stronger. thanks. — vmidiri (posted on June 7, 2009)

I'm two months post-op lap band and taking Cymbalta, and I haven't had any
problems with weight gain or otherwise with the medication. FYI (in case
it matters to you): I am taking it for depression, and I was taking it
before surgery as well.)

I am 2 years out and actually take 2 medications for depression. The
medicines are Zoloft and Amitryptaline (spellin may be off). I have lost
224 pounds and haven't had any problems gaining any weight back. I take the
medicines to help me and have been on them three or four years. Hope this
helps!

I'm 3 months post-op RNY, and taking liquid Depakote (Valproic Acid is the
generic name) for my BiPolar Type 2, and I have not had any weight gain
issues. I don't really feel that I'm BiPolar, just that I suffer from
situational depression that can get pretty bad - but I haven't had a
significant depressive episode for over 6 or 7 years now, so I wanted to
wean off the medication before surgery, but my surgeon told me NO WAY. He
doesn't want any of his patients going off their psych meds for at least a
year after surgery.

Hi, I have been taking Topamax for three years and then had lapband surgery
10 months ago. I have experienced no problems.

I am 9 months out and I was totally unaware of my mood swings but ALL of my
family noticed it. Everyone was asking my husband what was wrong with me.
I have a really good board certified bariatric physician. He doesn't do
surgery just before and after care. I took my husband in to explain what I
was doing because I was clueless. He put me on a mood stabilizer and I
have to admit that even I notice the difference even though I didn't
realize there was a problem in the first place. My doctor said that my
body and hormones were having a hard time "catching up" to my new
weight. I suppose this is just an area that I didn't think about pre
surgery.

I take Effexor - no weight gain. For a while I was on Topamax for
migraines - lost 34 pounds. Yep. I was one of the lucky ones that
actually lost weight on it. However, I didn't like the way it made me
feel, so I stopped and only take Fioricet when needed (which lately is
every few days - don't know what's causing these migraines).
