Question:
I am having the feeling of needing to urinate but can't.
I have never had a urinary tract infection or bladder infection prior to having RNY. This morning I started getting a sensation as though I need to urinate, when I try just a tiny squirt comes out and then I have a "burning" sensation for about 20 seconds. About 5 minutes later I start the whole process over again. This has lasted all day. I think I am describing a UTI or bladder infection but also read somewhere that if you are not getting in enough liquids that you can get "false" symptoms like an infection? Has anyone heard of this or had similar symptoms since having WLS? I am two months post op Laprascopic RNY. Thanks, Beth — [Deactivated Member] (posted on July 13, 2006)

sounds a lot like a UTI to me. haven't heard of similar symptoms from not
drinking enough. My first few days post op were realy bad with fluids and I
never felt like that. Go get some meds, you should be able to swallow them
by now. Or get some cranberry pills & drink lots of cranberry juice,
Ocean Spray makes a diet now, don't know what the calories or sugars are so
check the label first. Good Luck!!

Oh, my, yes, that does sound like a UTI. Been there, done that, hated it!!
You need to take a urine sample [even if it takes all day to collect it
=0) ] to your doctor or lab -- call your PCP and find out what he wants.
You might need antibiotics, and that wonderful pill that stops the pain and
burning, but turns your urine bright fluorescent pumpkin orange. If it's
just irritation from very concentrated urine, get sipping! Please do not
let this go! ( no pun intended) A UTI can spread up the ureters to the
kidneys, and that is not a good thing. Or, the walls of the bladder get
inflamed, and when you empty it, they rub together and bleed -- that's a
sight you don't ever want to see! Instant panic! Once you have this
cleared up, please be sure you get your 64 ounces of water in every day.
And you might want to try cranberry juice, either the juice itself (watch
out for calories!) or as pills or capsules. It makes the urine more acid,
and this knocks out most bacteria that cause UTIs. Good luck, I hope you
get this cleared up fast, I've got my legs crossed in sympathy! -- Mary

Thank you Sarah and Mary for responding so quickly. My urine (the little
bit that does come out) is darker in color so I'm thinking maybe
dehydration? I thought I was drinking all of the time, but the more I
think about it....I always have water with me but am not necessarily
drinking it. I happen to be drinking a diet Ocean Spray cranberry juice
right now in hopes that it will help clear up this little situation. But,
I am definitely calling my Dr. tomorrow because I don't want to mess around
with my kidneys! Thanks again so much for your insight. Beth

Beth drink lots of fluids. I bought me a 1000cc water bottle at Wal-Mart
because I have the same problem you describe when I don't drink enough
water. Been to ER 3 times for dehydration due to virus 2 twice and first
time for really bad bad kidney infection I had gotten Post-Op from Foley
catheter that didn't show up for 2 weeks then start running temp of 104
with nausea/vomiting/chills and inability to void at all. I found if I
stick to "water" rather then other liquids like
"sugerfree" stuff I do much better. Try adding "Light"
Cranberry juice from Oceanspray to you liquids daily it will improve your
urine PH balance. OJ is acid so are most citrus juices so I really avoid
them. If you have trouble with dumping due to suger in drink which is
really low add water to dilute. If the problem continues need to let the
surgeon know but also see your primary care physican for possible Urine
Analaysis. I have actually bleed from my kidney's and not had a UTI before
just not enough fluids in me after lab test results came back. Cleared up
with lots and lots of fluids

I also just wanted to add about the cranberry juice. It has great
properties to prevent this in the future. I had a horrible one - on
vacation, uggghhh!! - and now I drink a little each day. Also a nurse told
me 2 hints for females. One - after urinating, always wipe front to back.
And two - always urinate after sex. I hope you're feeling better! Sorry
this is later, I didn't check my mail. Good luck!!!

You can get the urge to urinate if you do not drink enough water, but ,
given the burning snsation, you should check it out with your doc to find
out if it is a uti.

I know what you are saying I had the same problem so I started pushing
fluids in me and it went away. I guess that way it is telling us we are not
drinking enough. And we don't want to get dehyrated thats for sure. Try
drinking lots and see if it quits... Have a good day. Cindy

That's so weird--I NEVER had a UTI before surgery either, but I've had a
couple since. This is a pain that I wouldn't wish on anyone, and
unfortunately it sounds like you've got one. I spoke to a pharmacist the
first time I had one and he recommended a pill called Cystex to help with
the pain. I couldn't afford to go to a doctor right away, so I bought the
pills, and WOW-what a life saver! They don't turn your urine day-glow
orange and they take the pain away. It helped me cope like a normal person
until I could get to the doctor for antibiotics.

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I do not claim to be a Dr. but it
seems that I was not getting in enough fluids. The very next morning I did
not have anymore symptoms. I had been drinking diluted Cranberry Juice and
water all day and really made a point to just "drown" myself in
liquids, and have ever since. No more symptoms. Seems to have done the
trick. I do have my three month post op coming up shortly and I will let
the Dr. know what happened anyway. But, in the meantime, liquids seemed to
be the trick. Thanks again for all of your responses! Beth
