Question:
Dietitian-what if they don't agree with WLS as an option..how will that affect ins?

I am going through my 6 month Dr supervised diet and went to see a dietitian who is not very supportive of the surgury and feels doing it the old-fashioned way is the way to go. How will this affect my ins....my ins requires the Dr sup. diet with dietitian? Should I keep looking for a dietitian who is more supportive of the WLS?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on April 12, 2006)

Hi Racheal, Happy Belated B-Day.. you and my daughter share the same b-day!! I would be more inclined to find a different dietician, it may make things go smoother for you not to mention make you feel better of your choice, you dont want to have to deal with someone week after week who is not supportive of your choice. Best wishes to you!!

My surgeon has his own nutritionist that I go to see ... I assume yours does not have one or else you would be going to him or her. You could possibly switch nutritionists ... Or perhaps hang with the one you have, complete the six month diet, and still move forward with wls. Ask your surgeon what he or she recommends.

Hi Rachael, I would find another dietician, I have found through this process you need all the support you can get. And you never know what they might put in their report to the insur. better safe than sorry later. LOL Jen

I would keep going and stick it out. If the criteria is that you have to have the six month supervised diet, then it doesn't make any difference what the dietician puts in her "report" other than to say you were compliant with the program. I certianly would not want to "start all over". It does not make any difference if she is supportive of WLS or not.

I would seek another RD. This one has her opinion and you're not going to change it. I've seen an opinionated RD scuttle more than one person's chance for surgery. Please see one near or affiliated with a WLS center near you. One who simply doesn't "believe in surgery" can write you off as non-compliant, whether you are or not.
