It is hard to be denied by the psyc eval. Depression prior to surgery is a
big risk factor. People who were not depressed get depressed after surgery.
He may have felt the primary doctor and surgeon should not have encouraged
you given the problem. You need to understand the sugery will not change
who you are or your life. You will still have issues and one of your coping
tool(food) will not be available.
While you are disapointed use this to make you stronger. Get a new referal
to redo the psych eval and see if there is a differant therapist who can do
the evaluation. Put on a happy face and show them you are strong. That you
understand what this surgery will and will not do. Don't give up.

get your own evaluation done. Get a psychiatrist and a therapist to write
a letter. That's what I did.

Some surgeon's have a list of Pych doctors they refer to because they are
more familiar with obesity as a disease and the psychological bearing
surgery may have. Not all psychologists agree with bariatric procedures. I
would ask your surgeon if he has a specific person he refers to. If this is
not possible don't give up call the doctor that evaluated you and ask him
what steps he would like you to take to become more emotionally ready in
his eyes. This journey called weight loss surgery has it's trials and
tribulations but I promise stay as positive as possible the reward will be
great. Best of luck to you.!!

Go see another shrink. Get a referral from the surgeon to a "wt loss
friendly doc" if possible. DAVE

Find another doctor to do the psych eval. They just want to make sure you
are mentally fit for the surgery. I would find someone to help me and
document for me(write a letter saying your are mentallly fit). Good Luck

Don't be discouraged because you are doing this for YOU and not anyone
else! Your doctor is only wanting to make sure you have a safe journey. I
have to say I'm only a few days post op but my experience with True Results
was amazing! I love the staff and my doctor. Not to mention they are a very
reputable organization. You can always change doctors and take all the test
results with you or they can transfer them to the doctor you choose. I did
this because I wasn't comfortable with my first choice. So remember this is
for you and if you're not comfortable find someone you know will be there
for you. Keep your spirits up, you've made an important decision to lead a
happy and healthy life! Good luck!!!!

I would step back and journal about why he might think that this may not be
the best direction for you. I would also get a second opinion. Be sure to
be honest about how you feel because perhaps there really is a reason you
shouldn't have this surgery because it can cause depression as someone said
earlier. You will no longer have food as a comfort to lean on. May the
right things happen for you. Corina

People are ignorant sometimes...even doctors and healthcare professionals.
ALOT OF PEOPLE SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION! Seems many people are depressed
after seeing the psychiatrist....LOL Don't let it bother you

My psych eval focused on whether I take on challenges and take
responsibility. If I had an eating disorder [bulimia, anorexia. binging]
my surgery would be denied.
IU've had depression since childhood, worsening in mid 40s, controlled by
SSRIs.
Since RNY I'm really aware of food issues like psychological hunger vs
physical hunger. Despite my imperfections I've lost 50 lbs in 11 weeks
effortlessly.
So get another eval.

Wendy, why don't you make an appointment with this psychologist to find out
exactly what is going on. When I had my psych eval the Dr was telling me
that having this surgery would not automatically change my life. Just to be
funny I said, "You mean George Clooney won't call me?" The
psychologist's head shot up and she looked at me intently to make sure I
wasn't serious. I assured her it was just a joke. If she hadn't inquired
she may have denied me simply because of that remark. maureen

The same thing happened to me. I had to wait another 5 months to get the
ok. After a few classes, and alot of smiles and "happiness", I
was got a clearance. Dont give up. Hang in there. Remember this is for
YOU!. Be patient and keep your eye on the prize.

I also had to get counseling, however it helped greatly. I am an emotional
eater, and suffer with depression, they wanted to be sure that I wouldn't
go back to my old habit. I went for 4 or 5 sessions before he cleared me
for surgery, on the condition that I would return for further counseling. I
went for about 4 more counseling sessions after surgery, before he signed
off. Go to the counseling, it is for your own good!
May God Bless You Abundantly, Kathie
