Question:
Had Abnormal EKG
Went to my primary Dr. today for blood work to prepare for Roux N Y Gastric Bypass. She said that my EKG was slighly abnormal and I must do a stress test and Echo. Can that prevent me from having surgery? Everytime I go to her machine reads the same thing and we I go to the heart dr. as a follow up NOTHING IS WRONG? Please share any experiences with me. — seimone123 (posted on October 15, 2008)

Once you have the stress test and echo, the cardiologist will know more.
If it is normal, he/she will most likely clear you for surgery and all
should be well. On an EKG in the PCP's office, even a little blip could
mean something or nothing at all.. it is her job to have you see a
specialist and be sure all is well.
Good luck,

My doctor never asked for an EKG, had me go for a dobutamine stress echo
instead. Even if there is a small problem it should not prevent you from
being able to have your surgery. They just need to know what they are
dealing with beforehand. Remember most of us who have this surgery have
some type of other problems also. Good luck!

My EKG was abnormal. Had a nucler stress and it showed no problems. Had my
surgery July 1, 2008 and have lost 58 pounds. I had no problems during
surgery or after. Good Luck! Lisa

My EKG showed a heart mummer. I went 20 years in the military without them
telling me I had one, but there it was. I did the stress test and the
cardiologist told me that a Grade 1 heart mummer was fairly common. It did
not stop him from okaying the surgery. I had no problems during surgery.
That was back in March 2008. I have now lost 80 pounds.

I had an abnormal EKG and did a stress test. Send all results to the
surgeon and discuss it with him/her.

Don't stress before knowing! However, I know how you feel, as it happened
to me 3 weeks ago! I also had a stress test that showed something was wrong
too...and barely 10 days before my surgery date. I was soooo
disappointed. The cardiologist then told me the next step would be an
angiogram, which meant anesthesia and risks when the camera would wander
through my arteries. I was so stressed and anxious. Then, and friend of
mine (a physican)stepped in and told me that I should have a CAT scan
instead (less invasive and less expensive too). The test came back
negative, I had my surgery done last Saturday (10th), and I feel great. OK,
I was overexcited to be alive when I woke up, and it made a nurse laugh,
but this all thing showed me not to stress over 1 "abnormal"
result: even though you can't ignore the results and have to investigate
more, false positive results on cardiac tests are frequent too! Go for it
and good luck!!!

I had an abnormal EKG, I had a stress test, cleared for surgery and had
surgery Monday, Look for the bright side-- they just want to make sure that
everything will come out OK.
