Question:
WLS AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS IS IT A PROBLEM???

I am getting either the lap-band or gastric bypass but I have several autoimmune disorders. Has anyone had complications with this? Lupus? AntiPhosphoLipid Syndrome?? I would love to hear from anyone with info!!    — Agrippina05 (posted on December 5, 2007)

I was just wondering if you have thought about the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. The reason I ask is that with the VSG you don't have any problems with drug absorption. Just a thought. Pat

My sister had open RNY almost 5 years ago. She has lupus and fibromyalgia. After her weight loss, her lupus improved dramatically - she had to cut her meds back a lot. She still has both lupus and fibromyalgia, but she's doing way better than she was before surgery.

I had the lapband done in Aug of 2006. I also have lupus and fibromyalgia. Since the weight loss I feel so much better and sometimes forget I even have lupus and fibromyalgia. It has been such a blessing. I started out at 231 and now weigh 146. I would recommend the lapband to anyone!

I have cfs/me and my docs think it RNY will help eleviate my symptoms. It is part of why I made the final decision to do this.

I have no clue if this is correct... but this is what my thought is. With an autoimmune problem, usually the immune system attacks the host (you) because it sees it as being a foreign invader. With the lap-band, you are going to have a foreign object inside you that could potentially cause problems. With the gastric bypass, as far as I understand, you do not have any implants. Best wishes.

I've been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, although we don't know which one it is yet, but I had my surgery on 11/15/07. Things went extremely well. The morning of the surgery, i felt pretty darn good and I think it was because of the colon cleanse we do with the Fleet's enema. Anyway, I'm 3 weeks post op and have very little pain and I just started Humira injections to keep it that way. I don't know what the surgery did, but I felt no pain when i came home. For the surgery, they pumped me with plenty of prednisone.
