Ali, have you tried the GNC stores, The only way I know to build muscle is to lift wieght. You have to eat within an hour after exercise because you have to feed muscle. You are going to have to build up to eating carbs. You arr only a month out of surgery and I your stomach is not ready to intake certain foods. I'd advise you to take your time. Yes, carbs is a big part of building muscle, however, you are loosing weight and as you increase your workout plan to include weights you will begin to build muscle. I believe there is another message board having to do with exercise, you might want to start there.

You want to keep what muscle you have. Once I was cleared by the doctor's I started out with aerobic activity and light weights working with weight machines with numerous repitions. I started out slow and am now working an elliptical machine for an hour at a time and have almost tripled the weights I lift with the machines in about 9 months. I am cautious about the weights due to hernias. I am staying on this routine of 3 days with weights/aerobic and 4 days with aerobic activity only. I want my body in the best shape possible for when I get an evaluation for plastics. I don't want to build muscle mass just improve what I have. I still have about a year before that is possible but the routine I have set for myself is reasonable and easy to follow. Good Luck with your journey.

I had the same problem, I was lifting and still losing muscle. I guess probably not enough protein. I started drinking ISOPURE from GNC, Liquid protein and tastes like Gatarade. I like the passion fruit the best or the grape. No carbs, No sugar, 40 grams whey protein, 160 calories only on the days I work out, I drink it right after that it works well to build muscle.

Every diet will result in a certain loss of muscle mass ... At one month out, follow the eating plan your NUT gave you. If you have clearance to exercise, start out slowly and build up. Aerobic exercise is good for your cardiovascular system, but only weight lifiting increases muscle mass.

Please be aware that many body builders worry about CALORIES. So do we, but for different reasons. If we ate what they ate, we'd be huge and it wouldn't be muscle, unfortunately. What we do that is the same nutritionally is protein supplements. We don't do them with milk or juices to add calories, but we do the 30g pre AND post workout, as well as a few more 30g per day. Some body builders use 1g per 1# of body weight as a guide. But I'd say that'd be 1g per 1# of GOAL body weight, since many of us start over 300#. I do a routine 180g a day, but weigh around 115. BUT I have a more radical procedure, so my base protein is more than others do. When working out, I do my 180g PLUS 2 more. (an extra 30g + 30g). I do not add any "calories", but do a small amount of healthy carb before/after, like 1/2 a meat & cheese sandwich on a healthy bread.

To build muscle, exercise, weight training, and protein! My niece's boyfriend is a certified physical trainer, and he drinks protein shakes every day, and lifts weights. I was also told by my doctor that gatric bypass patients need to do Atkins for the rest of their lives, essentially. Aren't carbs for quick releaase energy when you are doing activities like running marathons?

Ali... I am a huge fan of giving the body proper nutriantswith a good number of protein throughout the day ... I also do compete in figure shows... I have a stong will power and have very good results through a process of learning how to be teachable though positive golas and reaching out for help... When you rob your body of protein, this is when the body starts stealing the protein from muscles, heart and so on.. But also know that abosrbtion of protein are different in us... Take the time to figure your body out... Be a teachable person and most of all stay connected to this site! It is truley a blessing! Peace out! Celeste
