Question:
Why am I weak, wobbly, shaky and sweating and having trouble eating?
I have night sweats that are miserable. I feel hungry but nothing satisfies me. I have even tried pedialyte. I am nine days post-op and I am miserable. I am so weak that I can hardly stand up. Any suggestions? Has anyone ever experienced these feelings? — LEANN S. (posted on December 6, 2001)

You are weak and shaking because you are literally starving your body and
it is responding to the absence of food and nutrition. You are also
responding the the violation of major surgery. You are describing the
feelings that many of us had at one week post-op. It will get better. Talk
to your surgeon. Are you at least drinking water or crystal light? Are you
trying protein drinks or anything else to get in some calories? What types
of foods did your surgeon prescribe? Blended foods? soft foods such as
cottage cheese? Are you able to eat anything, even if it doesn't satisfy
you? You're probably experiencing head hunger. Cottage cheese and protein
drinks can't make up for pizza or nachos, but that's what you'll have to
eat for a while now. Good luck!

It sounds to me a lot like what other people go through being just a week
post op. But call your surgeon to make sure it might not be something
else, after all, he is the one who knows your medical history and will be
able to assess your condition better than we can. Remember that the
anesthesia does a number on your system and can make you feel really crappy
for the first couple of weeks after the surgery. In fact, it takes around
5 weeks for the anesthesia and other meds to work their way out of your
system. I would try and make sure you are getting in your liquids each day
and other than that I would just take it easy and let your body adjust. It
has been through alot and needs time to recover and heal.
Take care and hope you get to feeling better soon!
