Question:
Would an all protein supplement diet be harmful while losing weight?
I've read the values for different foods and if I consume 64 ounces of water, take umpteen vitamins and mineral supplements, and try to consume 70 gr. of protein by eating chicken, cheese and tuna, I'll not have enough hours in the day to get it all in. I'm seriously considering doing it mostly with a protein supplement by adding fruits to it. Would this be harmful to me for a six month regimin as long as I'm getting all the other nutrients in? Of course I'll introduce food gradually along the way but my primary goal right now would be to lose the weight first then to maintain with a healthy diet. — Sherry M. (posted on October 30, 2000)

I had my surgery in Feb and have found it INSANE, the amount of protein
they expect you to ingest daily. I am suffering the consequences now with
the hair loss, and I love my carbs. I recently found a protein loaded
product that does not make me feel as though I am drinking baby formula and
I have tried it ALL. It is a smoothie mix, sugar and fat free, I use
crushed ice and juice and has 15 grams of protein per serving, and is
yummy. Finally!!! Woo Hoo. I dont see why it would make any difference
how you get the vitamins in, as long as you get them.
Good luck to you, stay healthy!!!!

I don't want to put a damper on things but my doctor does not allow the use
of protein drinks or bars. His belief is that you need the solid protein to
fill up your pouch and make you feel satisfied. The drinks just slide
through and don't make you full. Discuss this with your doctor before you
decide to do a liquid diet or otherwise.

This is why a forum like this is so great! Different opinions, different
experiences.......anyway, I disagree with Jeanne's doctor. I know that
when I drink a protein shake, I immediately feel full, energized, and stay
that way for hours. On a day when I don't get in at least one, for
whatever reason, I definitely feel the difference. To each his own! You
might want to check with Michelle at vitalady.com, she knows everything
there is to know about protein for the wls patient, but didn't know you
needed to ask. Also, Barb gives excellent advice, in that you need to make
your health your priority, rather than weight loss. We all understand the
desire to maximize our loss in the beginning, but it will do you no good if
you experience poor health in a few years as a result. Do the research,
then decide what is in your best interest LONG TERM. I have used a protein
supplement from the beginning, and I don't think I would be feeling as good
as I do now if I hadn't done that. Protein is the building block of cells.
It's necessary for healing. Good luck to you.
