Question:
Are loose bowel movements or diarrhea signs of malabsorption?
I had RNY medial, according to my surgeon. From what I am reading on here, at least I think what I am reading, seems that when you have loose stools or diarrhea, these are signs of fat not being absorbed. Am I correct? Thanks...Shirley — Shirley M. (posted on May 15, 2002)

Shirley, I know it's disgusting to ask but, maybe I could help alittle bit.
If the bowel movements are slick and float, most likely they are
containing some fat. If it's just diahrrea, then possibly, that's exactly
what it is. It may be something you are eating that is making this
happen..or like me, I have yeast in my intestines which is causing the
diahrrea. There are so many reasons for this but you can almost see the fat
in the stool if it's from malabsorption. Just my opinion. Hope it helped
alittle.

Diarrhea happens to all of us, not just people who have the By-Pass type
surgeries. I had VBG and I have diarrhea about once per week for no
aparent reason. It's been this way from the day I got home from the
hospital and I've just concidered it my body getting adjusted to my not
eating much and my rapid weight loss. What I've found to be odd or funny
is the ever changing colors of my BMs. They can be dark green, dark brown,
nearly black, nearly yellow, -- I broke out and laughed one day when I
realized it was yellow and just the day before it was nearly black!
