Question:
Can anyone recommend a good healthclub in the Greater Lowell Massachusetts area?
Embarrasingly enough I am pretty intimidated by the thought of going to Bally's with all the Barbies and Kens of the neighborhood. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks! — [Anonymous] (posted on January 2, 2002)

Hi I am not sure about your area, I just wanted to give my expirience with
Bally's, whom I just can't stand. I have had many a friend get roped into
their contracts which are nothing like they advertise. They even convinced
one woman I know to open up a special credit card just for her monthly fee
(I believe we are responsible for our own actions but Bally's should be
responsible for their false advertising). I personally use Lifetime Fitness
(twin city area on MN) and they are great. No hassels, I can cancel
whenever I want, and the clubs are so clean. I have no idea if they have
them in Massachusetts but if I can warn anyone to be extra carefull when
dealing with Bally's I feel better. If you want what they advertise on tv
make them give it to you.

Sorry, my answer posted before I was ready. Anyway, Curves are popping up
all over the place, so I would be willing to bet there is one near you. It
is an all women's gym, and it is a circuit training program that combines
cardio and strengthening . You do three rounds of hydrolic machines
combined with cardio work in between at your own pace. It takes a total of
30 minutes per workout and burns up to 5oo calories plus strengthens every
part of your body. I was a disbeliever when I first started, but boy I am
their biggest cheerleader now! The best part is that you can join on a
month to month basis to see if you like it so you don't get roped into a
yearly contract. It is $39.00 per month if you do the month to month plan,
or $29.00 per month if you sign a contract. I have been going for four
months now and just switched over to the year plan. It is fun, noone is
looking at you if you don't look like Barbie, and most women go there in
their crappiest sweats with no makeup! I go first thing in the morning and
in 30 minutes I am done. I hope you find one and give it a try! Good luck.
